About the role
Muon seeks an Instrument Development Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA developing infrared remote sensing instruments. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated engineer with a versatile skill set who is comfortable working across many layers of technical depth from individual components through system level. This role will be a key hands-on member of the instrument development team, working across disciplines to drive test and development activities from concept to delivery. Previous experience developing and operating infrared electro-optical systems, remote sensing instruments, and test infrastructure and instrumentation in fast-paced and small-team environments is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Define and implement instrument ground characterization and calibration and on-orbit calibration/validation plans in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Define and implement metrics and dashboards for health and performance monitoring of on-orbit instruments, support anomaly detection and root cause analysis.
- Support component and subsystem test efforts including defining test strategy and standards, creating test plans, executing testing, post-processing/analysis, and generating test reports.
- Support implementation and operation of ground support equipment and testbeds to support spacecraft integration, check-outs, and full system testing.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, tools, and methodologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in instrument development and operations.
- Collaborate effectively with other engineers, software developers, data product developers, ground segment team, and mission operations teams.
Qualifications
- B.S, M.S., or Ph.D. in a science or engineering field, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment, with exposure to spacecraft, infrared remote sensing instruments, and imaging systems.
- Experience developing and operating integrated test infrastructure and systems.
- Strong software skills in one or more languages (e.g. Python, C, C++).
- Experience performing instrument data analysis, post-processing, and test report generation.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated project management skills and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
- Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with new challenges each week.
Nice-to-have Skills
- Experience working in cleanroom environments.
- Experience working hands on with precision electro-optical equipment.
- Experience with system integration and delivery of complex HW/SW systems.
- Experience supporting integrated spacecraft testing and launch campaigns.
- Exposure to systems engineering, including requirements development and V&V.
Salary
The salary range for this role is $138K - 205K and will depend on a candidate's skills, geographic location, qualifications, and experience as defined during the interview process.
