The Mechanical Engineer for Test and Ground Support is responsible for designing, troubleshooting, and optimizing ground support and test systems for space station hardware. This role involves hands-on work to ensure test system functionality, conducting risk assessments, and supporting test planning and readiness reviews. The engineer collaborates with technicians and cross-functional teams to build high-quality test systems, analyze performance, and document test results. Additionally, they manage project scope, communicate progress to stakeholders, and implement agile project management methodologies.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and/or support design efforts for new ground support and test systems of space station hardware

  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with existing test systems to facilitate rapid iterative testing

  • Work hands-on to get test systems functional and eliminate barriers to testing

  • Conduct and assist with test planning, risk assessments, safety and test readiness reviews

  • Support the use of various testing, analysis, modeling and simulation tools to estimate or calculate system performance

  • Lead and support generation of posttest data reviews and test report documentation

  • Ability to work and collaborate with technicians to build high quality and functional test systems

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define project scope, goals, and deliverables

  • Communicating project progress, status, and potential issues to stakeholders and leadership

  • Implementing and maintaining agile project management methodologies throughout the project lifecycle

  • Perform additional job duties as assigned

Education & Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field

  • 0–5 years of experience in test engineering or a similar role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Hands-on experience in building, testing, and/or assembling spaceflight hardware

  • Experience in selecting mechanical components and instrumentation for test systems

  • Familiarity with the electrical integration of analog and digital components with data acquisition systems (e.g., cRIO, cDAQ, LabVIEW)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with pressure system test stands and complex fluid systems, including common industry fittings (ORB, JIC, AN, Swagelok, NPT, etc.)

  • Strong troubleshooting skills for real-time mechanical and electrical issues

  • Proficiency in data acquisition and analysis software such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python

  • Experience handling hazardous gases in laboratory and test environments (e.g., oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide)

  • Experience collaborating with mechanical and electrical technicians

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task

Requirements 

  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation

  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position

Physical Requirements

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time)

  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time)
