Strategic Space Systems Division has an opening for a Principal Engineer/Sr. Principal Engineer (Level 3/4), to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.

The Measurements Engineering Team is looking for qualified Instrumentation Engineers to join our diverse team. Measurements supports several testing and integration environments such as structural, propulsion, thermal, and deployment operations ranging from component level to full scale article on both R&D and flight hardware.

The ideal candidate will apply their electrical, mechanical, and computer skills while utilizing complex, state of the art, load control and data acquisition systems to support factory operations. Qualified individuals will collaborate with various disciplines and all levels of personnel throughout all phases of product lifecycle, IE: Test Planning, Hardware and Instrumentation design, procurement and or manufacturing, Test Set-up, Test Execution, Data Reduction and Test Report Preparation and presentation. Candidate must have Structural Test experience and an extensive understanding of the hardware and methodology employed during a large variety of different testing environments and scenarios. This is a very unique role that requires the candidate to possess expertise in both electrical and mechanical facets involved with all testing functions interchangeably.

The ideal candidate must be a motivated, driven individual with excellent communication skills, capable of working with minimal direction and little to no supervision. Candidate must have strong analytical / troubleshooting skills. Candidate must be willing and able to lead and mentor less experienced engineers. Responsibilities for the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Setup, Program, Operate, and maintain LCS and DAS

  • Plan and arrange for the equipment required for testing.

  • Interpret Test Requirements and Co-Author and publish Test Procedures.

  • Participate in Test Ready Reviews

  • Participate in post-test data evaluation, problem identification, and resolutions.

  • Have a thorough understanding of Wheatstone Bridge based sensors

  • Ability to generate 2D drawings in AutoCAD

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications (Level 3):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 years related experience or Master's Degree in a (STEM) discipline with 3 years experience

  • Experience with structures testing, Load Control and Data Acquisition systems (Particularly experience with MOOG and Pacific Instruments systems)

  • Direct hands-on experience with test, measurement & control engineering applications

  • Experience with data acquisition and load control hardware as well as related instrumentation such as: LVDTs, Strain Gages, String Pots, Load Cells, etc.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, Excel, Power Point, Visio, and Visual Basic

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret or Top Secret Clearance as well as Special access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

  • Experience with structures testing, Load Control and Data Acquisition systems (Particularly experience with MOOG and Pacific Instruments systems)

  • Direct hands-on experience with test, measurement & control engineering applications

  • Experience with data acquisition and load control hardware as well as related instrumentation such as: LVDTs, Strain Gages, String Pots, Load Cells, etc.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, Excel, Power Point, Visio, and Visual Basic

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret or Top Secret Clearance as well as Special access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intermediate/Advanced instrumentation/data system/sensor/strain gage knowledge and experience in testing applications

  • Interest/experience in learning/operating Digital Image Correlation System

  • General electrical engineering concepts proficiency

  • Experience in Aerospace focused I&T integration operations with manufacturing/production

  • Extensive hydraulic/pneumatic control system, set up, commissioning and checkout experience.

  • Experience in mechanical assembly & test, analog electronics, transducers, strain gage design & installation experience

  • Secret or Top Secret clearance preferred, retaining position dependent upon acquiring and maintaining a clearance

Salary Range: $100,300.00 - $150,500.00Salary Range 2: $124,900.00 - $187,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
