We have an opening for an Avionics Analog & Power Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Tactical Space organization. The primary need for this position is in Dulles, VA .

In this role, you will have the opportunity to conduct analyses and provide design inputs on components ranging from circuit cards to larger systems. Your contributions will be valued throughout the design process to ensure that the systems operate as designed and meet requirements.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Analog & Power Circuit Design:
    • Design and develop analog and power circuits for space applications.
    • Create schematics and select appropriate components for high-reliability and radiation-hardened environments.
    • Design electronic circuits with analog and power functionality for spacecraft applications, including power converters that interface with Solar Arrays and batteries, as well as housekeeping circuitry for internal power distribution.
    • Participate in design reviews and work with the eCAD team on board layout and build. Define layout constraints and provide oversight to board layout personnel.
    • Create test plans for Test Engineers and participate in Failure Review Boards and Satellite integration.
    • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers concerning requirements, design, and maintenance of both hardware and software.

  • Simulation and Analysis:
    • Perform simulations to verify the performance of analog and power circuits.
    • Conduct electrical and thermal analysis to ensure designs meet specifications and space environment requirements.
    • Use Saber for most advanced analyses along with LTspice and MATHCAD.
    • Evaluate circuit performance under extreme conditions (temperature, voltage, component tolerances) through Worst Case Analysis (WCA).
    • Analyze power supply designs to ensure they meet performance criteria (efficiency, noise, stability) through Power Supply Analysis (PSA).
    • Identify potential failure modes and their effects on system performance through Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and implement corrective actions to mitigate risks.

  • EMI/EMC Analysis:
    • Ensure designs comply with EMC standards to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) and conduct EMC testing as needed.

  • Prototyping and Testing:
    • Collaborate with prototype shop personnel (EDL) to build prototypes and validate design concepts.
    • Perform hardware debugging and troubleshooting.
    • Develop detailed test programs to evaluate designs in accordance with stated requirements.

  • Documentation and Collaboration:
    • Write comprehensive performance specification documents outlining design requirements, operational parameters, and performance criteria.
    • Develop a test verification matrix as part of the performance specification document to map each design requirement to specific tests and verification methods.
    • Document acceptance criteria for each test to confirm design meets performance standards.
    • Generate documentation and review packages for flight boards.
    • Prepare detailed design documentation, including schematics, block diagrams, and test procedures.
    • Work closely with other engineering teams (test engineering, systems engineering, mechanical engineering) and collaborate with project managers to ensure timely delivery of design milestones.
    • Ensure designs comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Continuous Improvement and Optimization:
    • Optimize power efficiency and performance of analog circuits and ensure robustness under harsh space conditions.
    • Identify and mitigate risks associated with analog and power designs.
    • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
    • Mentor junior engineers and share expertise within the team.
