Job description

Share in the thrill of space exploration and join our team! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) has openings for up to four paid interns in our Instruments Division (INS). This is a great opportunity to build practical experience in data analysis and software development for applications in support of space astronomy missions. As an INS Intern, you will work with a mentor in an instrument team in developing software tools and performing analyses to support the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescopes, two of NASA flagship missions. Interns can work up to 20 hours per week, for up to one year.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for Baltimore-area undergraduate students who are dedicated, hardworking, eager to learn, and can work with minimum supervision. This opportunity is geared to majors in computer science, data science, aerospace engineering, physics, or astronomy (or related fields) with an interest in pursuing careers in scientific data analysis. This program may build experience in astronomical instrumentation, statistical analysis, scientific programming (especially in python), machine learning methodologies, and utilizing cloud computing services. Previous experience in one or more of these areas is desired, but not required.

The opportunity may be ideal for you if you are seeking “outside of the classroom” experiences to further grow professionally in a team setting, if you want to participate in forefront science and have an interest in astronomy.

You are invited to apply

Applications will be accepted until February 28, 2025. You will need to submit a resume with a brief (no more than 3 pages) cover letter describing your interest in the position, relevant skills, and your availability. Successful candidates must be enrolled as undergraduate students in a Baltimore-area college or university (within 50 miles of STScI) at the start of their appointment.

Please submit an on-line application by going to https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/login/program/83072

The Space Telescope Science Institute is located on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. STScI staff will be working both in the office and from home in a hybrid work environment. Employees are required to be residents in the Baltimore-Washington area

Please check with your local university to confirm this experience will qualify as work for credit, if applicable. Hours are flexible 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday-Friday. This position qualifies for partial remote work with an on-site presence as needed for mentoring and team meetings. The interns can work up to 20 hours per week depending on availability and university credit requirements (if applicable). The duration of the internship is up to one year.
