About Skylo

Skylo is a global Non-Terrestrial Network service provider based in Mountain View, CA, offering a service that allows smartphone and IoT cellular devices to connect directly over existing satellites.

Skylo’s direct-to-device service is now live across four continents, with more than 50 million square kilometers of coverage, in partnership with multiple satellite operators, mobile network operators (MNOs), Tier-1 chipset makers, and OEMs. Devices connected over satellite are managed and served by Skylo's commercial NTN vRAN, featuring a 3GPP standards-based cloud-native base station and core. Skylo provides anywhere, anytime connectivity solution that seamlessly roams between terrestrial and satellite networks. Our focus is on enabling connected services for people outdoors and connected workflows across three main verticals: mass-market consumer devices, automotive, and industrial IoT.

This role is located in Mountain View, CA where we are onsite 3 days a week in office.

Summary Of How You Will Impact Skylo

Skylo is hiring a Certification Engineer to help fulfill Skylo’s mission of making satellite connectivity available to all. This individual will ensure NTN NB-IoT devices and networks meet Skylo and carrier standards. This role is key to expanding satellite-based connectivity to remote areas. The engineer will oversee compliance testing and certification processes. They will also collaborate with industry partners to refine standards and improve network performance.

How You Will Contribute

  • Develop and execute test plans: Develop and execute comprehensive test plans covering various aspects of NTN NB-IoT functionality, including device performance, network compatibility, and compliance with 3GPP, regulatory, and carrier-specific requirements e.g. Skylo-specific NTN NB-IoT standardPlus, FCC Part 25, ETSI EN 301 681, EN 302 574 (Part 3), EN 301 489, etc.
  • Conduct rigorous testing: Perform and coordinate extensive testing of devices and network elements in lab and NTN field environments, simulating real-world conditions and satellite link characteristics.
  • Analyze test results and troubleshoot issues: Thoroughly analyze test data, identify any deviations from expected performance, and work with development teams of devices, modules, and chipset OEMs to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Collaboration with stakeholders: Collaborate closely with device manufacturers, network operators, and satellite providers to ensure seamless integration and interoperability of NTN NB-IoT systems.
  • Certification documentation: Prepare detailed test reports and documentation to demonstrate compliance with the Skylo-specific, cellular carriers and world-wide regulatory requirements and facilitate the certification process.
  • Stay abreast of industry standards: Keep up to date with the latest 3GPP standards for NB-IoT and NTN, as well as evolving carrier specifications and testing methodologies.
  • Contribute to process improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize testing procedures and contribute to the development of best practices for NTN NB-IoT carrier certification.

What We Look For

  • 3 years of experience in Cellular & satellite communications with emphasis on carrier device certification
  • Strong understanding of NB-IoT and NTN: In-depth knowledge of NB-IoT technology, including its architecture, protocols, and applications, as well as a solid understanding of satellite communication systems and Non-Terrestrial Networks.
  • Testing and validation expertise: Proven experience in developing and executing test plans for wireless communication systems, with a focus on NB-IoT and/or satellite technologies.
  • Familiarity with 3GPP standards: Knowledge of relevant 3GPP standards including GCF/PTCRB and specifications for NB-IoT and NTN, including testing and certification requirements.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills: Strong analytical abilities to interpret test results, identify root causes of issues, and develop effective solutions.
  • Communication and collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with internal teams, carrier representatives, and external partners.
  • Tools and technologies: Proficiency in using relevant test equipment such as Keysight UXM, R&S CMW, and Anritsu RF & Protocol test equipment, software tools, and simulation platforms for NB-IoT and satellite communication testing.
  • Education and experience: A Bachelor's or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field, with relevant experience in wireless communication testing and certification.

Additional Considerations:

  • Specific carrier requirements: The exact responsibilities and required skills may vary depending on the specific carrier and their network implementation.
  • Emerging technology: NTN NB-IoT is an evolving field, so continuous learning and adaptability are crucial for staying current with the latest advancements.
  • Travel: Some travel may be required to 3rd party labs, test facilities, or field locations.

This job description provides a comprehensive overview of the role of an NTN NB-IoT Carrier Certification Engineer. As the adoption of NTN NB-IoT grows, this role will become increasingly important in ensuring the reliable and seamless connectivity of IoT devices in diverse and challenging environments.
