The Aerospace Corporation is hiring a Space Photovoltaics Engineer for an opportunity located in El Segundo, CA.
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
As a Space Photovoltaics Engineer within PSL’s Energy Technology Department (ETD), you will be focused on supporting the development of new tools, capabilities, and prototypes for evaluating and analyzing data for assessing next generation spacecraft solar cell and solar array technology for national security space programs. You will collaborate with industry partners and program offices to ensure the success of critical space missions by evaluating and understanding the relevant properties of different components of the solar array and how they degrade in the relevant space environment. This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA.
Work Model:
This position will be located 100% onsite in El Segundo, CA.
What You’ll Be Doing
Combine hands-on engineering aptitude and scientific method approach to support the design and development of industry leading tools and capabilities for characterizing advanced space photovoltaic and other energy generation technologies.
Contribute to taking laboratory data, managing database, performing data analysis and developing modeling tools in support of solving customer's problems related to space solar array technologies.
Effectively communicate technical findings and provide technical consultation to department colleagues, Aerospace management, program offices, government, and the larger scientific community on topics related to space power generation technology designs, anomaly investigations, and future power needs

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university program in Chemical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related discipline (pursuing or conferred within the last 12 months)
0-1 year industry experience
Experience in conducting opto-electronics materials research or device physics characterization and/or modeling
Experience using a common processing language or data analysis software (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C/C++, LabVIEW, Excel, Origin) to implement solutions to problems in device characterization
This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
Experience in III-V photovoltaics
Experience with one or more of the following techniques in electro-optical characterization: quantum efficiency measurements, IV measurements, steady-state and/or time-resolved luminescence techniques, minority-carrier lifetime spectroscopy, DLTS, capacitance techniques, scanning defect mapping, reflectance spectroscopy
Electrical engineering experience in the following: Schematic analysis and design knowledge, PCB layout and design knowledge, experience building circuit boards
Experience investigating radiation and space environmental effects in materials such as semiconductors, perovskites, CIGS, and other power generation technologies
Developed open-source software that implements new methods, models, etc. that helps users to better examine and understand photovoltaic or other energy generation systems
Other Software Skills – Thermal Desktop, Geant4, MCPNX, Spice, SRIM, Jupyter Notebook, InfluxDB
Experience with exploitation of large datasets, data management and analysis for fundamental research applications such as application of AI/ML to data analysis
