Software Engineering Manager

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories in Baltimore, Maryland, with 800+ employees. Learn more about our missions The Data Management Division (DMD) is seeking a Software Branch Manager for the area of archiving and distribution of our mission data. This position provides leadership, supervision, technical direction and mentorship of a diverse team of software engineers, build engineers and test engineers.

This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

The annual salary range for this senior level role is $160,000 - $180,000.  The posted salary range represents a general guideline; however, STScI considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, such as internal pay equity, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's experience, education, and skill, and current market conditions.

Software Branch Manager Role

The manager is responsible for the development and operational maintenance for archiving for the JWST, HST and Roman missions. The archive area ingests, catalogs and distributes science and other archive products.  

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage software engineers and astronomers working in an agile environment
• Provide project management including coordination, detail planning, direction, and reporting
• Provide functional management including recruitment, coaching, mentorship, and training
• Establishing goals and track expected results to closure
• Develop, maintain, and support continuous improvement activities
• Coordinating with other groups both within and outside STScI
• Analyze technology and resource needs to plan and assess the feasibility of projects
• Participate in the development of standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed at STScI and implement them within the branch

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

• Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, or a related scientific or technical field
• Demonstrated progressive technical, management, and leadership experience
• Effective communication skills
• Experience managing staff developing and supporting a large complex system
• Software engineering experience
• Working knowledge of code versioning tools such as git
• Demonstrated project management experience
• Experience migrating legacy software applications, supporting both systems until successful retirement
• Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD)

The position level and salary are commensurate with education, skills and experience.
