Who are we?
ICEYE is the global leader in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite operations for Earth Observation, persistent monitoring, and natural catastrophe solutions; owning and operating the world's largest SAR constellation. ICEYE is headquartered in Finland and operates from five international locations with more than 700 employees from nearly 60 countries, inspired by the shared vision of improving life on Earth by becoming the global source of truth in Earth Observation.
Our satellites acquire images of Earth at any time – even when it’s cloudy or dark – providing commercial and government partners with unmatched persistent monitoring capabilities. Information derived from our SAR images helps customers make data-driven decisions to address time-critical challenges in various sectors, such as maritime, disaster management, insurance, and finance.
Our team is a tight-knit group of experts across many disciplines (e.g., engineering, software development, radar technology, etc.). We’re innovative, driven people who strive for excellence in everything we do. Teamwork, curiosity, and having fun are core values at ICEYE, and contribute to Making the Impossible possible!!
Why should you work for us?
ICEYE is at the cutting edge of new technology and we are continuing to build and operate our commercial constellation of SAR satellites. Working with ICEYE, you will be part of making the impossible possible, whilst shaping the Earth Observation industry. You will work with varied, diverse and engaged colleagues to further the ICEYE mission. At ICEYE we realise that without great people we can not succeed, therefore you will be an integral, valued and appreciated colleague, with the ability to directly shape the vision and direction of the business.
We actively support Continuous Professional Development, and will provide access to a range of avenues to allow you to succeed, including courses, training and attendance at conferences. ICEYE is a place where your development, your growth and your success is a priority.
What is the role?
We are seeking an experienced Senior Geospatial Data Scientist to join our Natural Catastrophe Solutions product team that is focused on deriving actionable insights about disasters like floods, wildfire and hurricane damage. As a key member of our product team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our products, steering them from the technical proof-of-concept phase into general product release. Your expertise in remote sensing, geospatial data science, software engineering, and product mindset will be essential to our success.
As a geospatial data scientist, you will help establish cloud-based workflows and algorithms that leverage geospatial data to support the development and implementation of ICEYE business solutions in the domain of natural catastrophe monitoring. You are a resourceful, passionate, and applied individual keen to apply your expertise to new areas in remote sensing and geospatial data science, but also willing to dig in and help with the execution of existing product development. You value data-driven decision making and can assimilate information from a variety of sources into a coherent and powerful analysis. You are a strong communicator and skilled at documenting and presenting your work to audiences of any level in a way that is concise, persuasive and most importantly, supported by the data. You will help to establish new techniques, fusing SAR and other remotely sensed data, to create state-of-the-art solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical responsibilities
- Development, deployment and maintenance of analytical tools, models and workflows for mapping and monitoring natural catastrophes
- Data Analysis, modeling, and insight generation: You will analyze complex spatio-temporal datasets to identify patterns, trends, and insights to advance our products
- You adopt and promote best engineering practices, and promote a culture of continuous learning to ensure the team constantly improves their development habits
- Identify strategies to accelerate the timeline of bringing R&D elements to production
Team responsibilities
- You are a team player, not a “lone wolf”
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (including product manager, SAR and remote sensing experts, machine learning engineers and software engineers) to design, develop, test, and maintain the product
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills by presenting technical information to stakeholders to drive informed strategic decision making
- Communicate technical needs and expertise required to support successful product development and scalable software solutions
- Proactive attitude: You suggest how to improve the product, how to address risks, challenges, and needs, fostering a transparent and collaborative environment
Requirements
What you need to succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, Geography/Geoinfomatics, Earth Sciences or related field (Master’s degree or PhD preferred)
- Experience with geospatial data science, machine learning and remote sensing
- Experience building, deploying and maintaining scalable, containerized applications in cloud-native environments (preferably AWS) using modern software engineering practices
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools and processes and version control best practices
- Proficient in the use of the latest geospatial data science tools, such as:
- Geospatial python (geopandas, rasterio, xarray)
- Geospatial databases (PostGIS)
- Geospatial APIs (OGC, STAC)
- ML frameworks (pyTorch)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- You can take challenging, abstract problems and break them down into solvable tasks
In addition to the above, it would be beneficial if you had the below attributes and skills:
- Experience working alongside people from diverse technical backgrounds
- Knowledge of SAR is a plus
- Knowledge of monitoring, mapping or modelling natural catastrophes (floods, wildfires or hurricanes)
