Job description
a.i. solutions is seeking a motivated Electromagnetic Compatibility/Radio Frequency/Ionizing Radiation (EMC/RF/IR) engineer to join the team supporting the NASA Launch Service Program at Kennedy Space Center. The Avionics Engineer will be assigned to the Vehicle Engineering and Analysis (VE&A) department performing tasks related to commercial launch vehicle systems and supporting our NASA customer. The position will work directly with the spacecraft and launch vehicle provider to ensure that all mission and vehicle requirements are properly implemented through review and independent verification. This individual will also ensure that NASA maintains insight into the launch vehicle capabilities and exercises approval authority on all applicable deliverables/analyses. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to embrace the a.i. solutions mission and work to continually exceed the expectations of our customers.
Essential Roles, Responsibilities and Skills:
- Familiarity with electromagnetic and physics concepts to execute electromagnetic compatibility, ionizing radiation and RF link analyses as applied to the integration of payloads and launch vehicles
- Perform electromagnetic modeling, intermodulation analysis, antenna, transmitter and receiver characteristics analyses
- Familiarity with grounding, bonding and wiring practices, induced lightning effects, static charging, and knowledge of range RF environments at launch sites utilized by the launch vehicle fleet
- Familiarity with space weather and ionizing radiation as it applies to hardware design and system survivability to Single Event Effects (SEE). Familiar with the following ionizing radiation and space charging tools to assess heavy ion, galactic cosmic rays and trapped proton environments: AP8, AP9, NOVICE, EMA3D Charge and CREME96
- Write and review EMC Control plans and evaluate test data from EMI/EMC standards such as MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-1541, MIL-STD-464, and NASA-STD-4003A
- Perform electromagnetic safety margin analysis and evaluate electroexplosive devices and critical circuits
- Participate in requirements development, review, and maintenance
- Review Interface Control Documents and other related mission documents
- Act as primary liaison between the NASA customer and the launch vehicle provider
- Support and/or present technical assessments or analysis results at Launch Vehicle mission reviews and Engineering Review Boards
- Provide flight design certification support for new launch service providers
- Support process improvement activities to advance the group
- Travel, as required
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering
- 10+ years of experience with electromagnetic compatibility, ionizing radiation, and RF link analyses or related support
- Familiarity with addressing EMC and RF issues with computational electromagnetic tools (i.e. EMA3D, CST, FEKO, WiPL-D, P-Spice, HFSS, etc.)
- Obtain successful completion of a government background check
- U.S. Citizenship
