About The Role

In June 2009, NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), a robotic spacecraft now orbiting the Moon at 50-200 km altitude. LRO's primary objective is to make fundamental scientific discoveries about the Moon. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) is one of seven instruments on board LRO. LROC comprises three cameras mounted on LRO that capture high-resolution black-and-white images and moderate-resolution multi-spectral images of the lunar surface.

In August 2022, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) launched the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter with NASA’s ShadowCam instrument on-board. ShadowCam compliments high-resolution LROC data by imaging in shadowed terrain, supporting research about the distribution and accessibility of water ice and other volatiles.

The Intuitive Machines Super Moon Science Operations Center supports LROC and ShadowCam by acquiring observations, creating derived products, and performing science analysis. We are looking for a motivated undergraduate student to assist in the production of high-resolution Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) of the lunar surface using SOCET SET by BAE Systems, a digital mapping software application for precision photogrammetry and geospatial analysis.

Responsibilities:

• Create DTMs of the lunar surface using ShadowCam and LROC data to support current lunar research projects and upcoming exploration.
• Perform other duties as assigned, which may include supporting our Education and Public Outreach efforts through events for ages pre-school through adult, contributing to oral presentations or written papers as needed, and/or image processing and analysis.  
• Support risk and compliance initiatives, ensuring successful implementation and adherence.

Qualifications:

• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Good organization and documentation skills
• Ability to remain detail-oriented while working with large data sets
• Basic image analysis and/or statistical analysis experience
• Available to work at least 15 hours/week most weeks.
• Undergraduate student, strongly prefer sophomores or juniors.
• Demonstrated ability to identify problems and develop mitigation procedures
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a group or independently on assigned tasks
• Enthusiastic about learning new skill sets
• Enthusiastic about contributing to lunar, planetary, or space science exploration.
• Bonus points for: programming, geographic information systems (GIS), geography, or geology experience or experience with planetary data sets
