Spacecraft Avionics/Electronics Team Lead

Orbion consists of a team of world-recognized leaders in space technology development and production. We are seeking a senior electrical engineer to manage and direct the Avionics and Electronics team at Orbion. Responsibilities of the Team Lead role include the support of avionics product manufacturing, the design, development, and qualification of new avionics products, and the development of specialized products for the testing of space propulsion systems. The position is responsible for managing the team personnel, growing the team’s technical skills, organizing and driving team projects, and coordinating with Orbion management to achieve company business and technical goals. Title and compensation based on experience of the candidate.

Position is on-site at Orbion’s headquarters in Houghton, Michigan

Responsibilities: 

  • Direct and manage Orbion’s avionics team
  • Direct team members who oversee Orbion’s electronics manufacturing partners
  • Support electronics production, including managing non-conforming product resolution
  • Provide technical direction to enable the avionics team to efficiently solve technical problems in production and design
  • Create engineering resource plans, development plans, and processes to optimize Orbion’s project staffing 
  • Establish budgets and schedules to help scope and lead projects
  • Mentor less experienced engineers to implement robust production systems and drive continuous improvements 
  • Utilize a continuous improvement mindset and train engineering staff in problem solving techniques to identify root cause and resolve problems in a timely fashion 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Must meet definition of US Person
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related degree 
  • 10 years of experience with development and production programs for complex electronic products
  • 6+ years of team management experience
  • Experience with EEE parts selection and supply chain considerations
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time (travel will primarily be within a half-day’s drive from Houghton)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electronics contract manufacturers either as a customer or an employee
  • Experience with electronic manufacturing processes such as: pick-and-place, solder reflow, AOI, conformal coat, etc.
  • Experience with space electronics and radiation tolerant design and qualification testing
  • Experience with power electronics
