Join the Tactical Space Systems Division (TSSD) Engineering organization in a strategic role as the Engineering Lead for the Satellite Missions (SM) Business Unit (BU) at our Dulles, VA campus. 


As the Engineering Lead for the SM BU, you will report directly to the TSSD Vice President of Engineering, with dotted line reporting to the TSSD Vice President of the SM BU.  You will be responsible for providing engineering leadership for Satellite Missions programs and pursuits. In this role, you will help transform the landscape of National Space in our restricted and unrestricted customer areas. Our main business locations include, but are not limited to Dulles, VA; Gilbert, AZ; Colorado Springs, CO; El Segundo, CA; and Albuquerque, NM. 

The Engineering Lead has several key roles:

  • Act as liaison between TSSD’s Engineering functional homeroom and the SM BU.

  • Support SM BU program, capture, proposal, and commitment reviews.

  • Engage with Engineering Cost Account Managers (CAMs) supporting SM BU on costs, risks, schedule, and technical progress.

  • Understand and communicate SM BU mission and staffing needs to Engineering directors and managers.

  • Advise on strategic roadmaps for existing and proposed product lines with guidance on their applicability to various space domains, capabilities, and risk posture.

Successful candidates will lead strategic initiatives with direct interaction with TSSD and SM Business Unit executives and be part of a team that demonstrates an attitude and approach founded in the following key characteristics:

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) or related technical field and a minimum of 14 years of applicable experience, or a Master's Degree and 12 years of applicable experience; or a PhD and 10 years of applicable experience,

  • Knowledge and experience with National Space and DoD customers.

  • U.S. citizenship with a current Top Secret clearance and the ability to obtain SCI.

  • Experience with Earned Value and / or Cost Account Management.

  • Proven experience working with diverse technical teams across multiple locations.

  • Previous work experience as a chief engineer and/or lead Systems Engineer (or SEIT Lead) on a diverse range of program sizes, values and complexity.

Preferred Experience:

  • U.S. Citizenship with a current Top Secret / SCI clearance.

  • Master of Science in Engineering or other STEM discipline and/or MBA degree.

  • INCOSE or other systems engineering certification or training.

  • Familiarity with the GEOStar-3 Product Line.

  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills.

Salary Range: $188,200.00 - $282,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
