Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

ELECTROMAGNETIC ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ENGINEER (STARSHIELD)

Starshield leverages SpaceX’s Starlink technology and launch capability to support national security efforts. While Starlink is designed for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, with an initial focus on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads. As an Electromagnetic Environmental Effects engineer on the Starshield team, you will be working on advanced development programs in support of US National Security. You will work with a dedicated team of engineers to ensure our avionics and RF hardware perform when integrated into a complex system of both sensitive and high-power avionics that must operate in harsh electromagnetic environments. You will work in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, where we are exploring unsolved problems and applying the SpaceX mindset of iterating rapidly to go from design and demo to operational capability at lightning pace.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Derive and define EMI/EMC/TEMPEST requirements from first principles and from system-level requirements
  • Perform various EMI/EMC/TEMPEST analysis
  • Work with responsible engineers to ensure that designs meet EMI/EMC/TEMPEST requirements
  • Perform component and system-level EMI/EMC/TEMPEST testing and automate testing as needed
  • Troubleshoot EMI/EMC/TEMPEST issues from system-level to board-level
  • Create documentation as needed such as: control plans, test plans, test procedures, test reports, verification reports, design guides, etc.
  • Operate a variety of EMI/EMC/TEMPEST test equipment including TEMPEST receivers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, probes, etc.
  • Mentor trainees seeking TEMPEST certification
  • Drive to improve operational efficiency in analysis and test processes without sacrifice to product quality

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or other engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of technical experience working with E3/EMI/EMC/TEMPEST design

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Certified TEMPEST Professional Level II
  • Experience with design/analysis/testing/troubleshooting for TEMPEST and EMI/EMC compliance
  • Experience with design for and testing to EMI/EMC standards including MIL-STD-461
  • Experience with design for and testing to TEMPEST standards including NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 and CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02
  • Experience using and automating TEMPEST and EMI/EMC test equipment including TEMPEST receivers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, probes, etc.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC requirements, design, and testing for spacecraft including:
    • Shielding, design for low radiated/conducted emissions, filtering, grounding, bonding, ESD, transient suppression, electromagnetic field coupling, magnetic moment, Maxwell's equations, lumped element modeling, computational electromagnetics modeling/simulation, fundamentals of EE/RF, etc.
  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering, physics or other technical areas of study
  • Experience with reading, interpreting and following: circuit schematics, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, BOMs, cable harnesses, wiring schematics, interface diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical drawings and CAD software
  • Experience working in a fast-paced work environment with flight hardware

  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, Ansys Electronics Desktop (HFSS, Maxwell, etc), SPICE, and Excel for EMI/EMC/TEMPEST analysis
  • Active Top Secret or Top Secret SCI clearance, or ability to obtain one desired but not required

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • An active clearance may provide the opportunity for you to work on sensitive SpaceX missions; if so, you will be subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing
