Job description

Turning Space into a Transportation Layer for Earth

Who We Are:

Eras of humanity can often be defined by a dominate transportation mode - horse drawn chariots, ocean going boats, or aircraft. These were spurred by a small group of people rigorously focused on building technology to achieve faster access to more of the world.  We seek to usher in a new era of humanity defined by universal access to the whole globe free of borders and the presence of a routine way from space to Earth. To do this, we are building highly maneuverable re-entry vehicles that can loiter in orbit before precision landing back on Earth.

What You’ll Do:

The Product Engineer III will be a highly interdisciplinary member of the Arc team who will be primarily responsible for ensuring the Arc vehicle program, schedule, and engineering goals align across all engineering groups. This role will have the unique responsibility to connect all of the engineering groups together with the broader context of the vehicle program. This role is most similar to a systems engineer role but with a strong emphasis on a hands-on approach with a high level of individual engineering contribution. The product engineer will be responsible for high level vehicle configuration management, vehicle level analysis, setting product requirements across multiple engineering disciplines, and more. An ideal candidate will be a self-driven generalist with a wide understanding of multiple engineering disciplines. The product engineer will look beyond simple requirements and question the status quo to drive innovation, working closely with company leadership to set product vision. The product engineer will need to think on their feet and adapt quickly, with a strong ability to learn and pick up new topics and tasks as needed. While aerospace experience is not explicitly required, the candidate needs to have demonstrated success with systems engineering problems that are equivalently complex and difficult as building spacecraft.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field OR equivalent experience

  • Broad range of engineering experience (not necessarily limited to the aerospace industry) including but not limited to structures, propulsion, mechanisms, mechatronics, electronics/avionics, software, simulation, and aerodynamics or hypersonics

  • Strong product management, configuration management, and problem solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, propulsion, and software engineers designing and building space-flight hardware

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

  • Comfortable with all aspects of a program; taking a design from concept through launch

  • 6+ years applicable experience (open to experience in fields other than aerospace)

  • This position is onsite at Inversion HQ in Playa Vista, CA.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related field

  • 8+ years applicable experience (open to experience in fields other than aerospace)

  • Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Jira, and similar project management strategies

  • Prior experience in design and test of qualified space-flight hardware

Our office headquarters is located in Playa Vista, CA. This position requires in office presence.
