Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector, Tactical Space Systems Division (TSSD) is seeking a qualified a Sr. Staff Systems Engineer. Successful candidates for this position will work in a lead technical role for the GEOStar-3 Product Line as a Spacecraft Bus Lead on a national security space program. The Spacecraft Bus Lead is responsible for leadership and oversight of a multi-discipline team of subsystem leads through the design, development, and integration of the spacecraft bus.
In this senior-level role, the Spacecraft Bus Lead is expected to be self-directed using previous experience to lead the Spacecraft design, analysis, integration and test planning efforts. Candidates must be able to recognize and mitigate payload, spacecraft, ground segment, and mission technical issues while operating within budget and on schedule. The candidate must be knowledgeable in aerospace systems, spacecraft subsystems design, and mission operations. Advanced analyses relating to mission and technical problems may be required. Position will include responsibilities relating to integration, testing, and operational readiness of spacecraft and payloads. The role will include interfacing with external customer technical representatives, internal engineering associates and program management and may also involve technical responsibility for subcontracted flight components. The bus lead is responsible for preparing and presenting Spacecraft SE material at all major reviews and PMRs. Duties include requirements flow down, management, and verification, generating complex specifications, interface control documents, and engineering reports from advanced studies, special engineering investigations, and similar activities. Tasks may also include EVMS/CAM, overseeing harness interface design, Command and Telemetry database development, and space vehicle configuration modeling. This position is located on-site in Dulles, VA.
Responsibilities:
Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team of subsystem engineering leads in the design, development and integration of the spacecraft bus
Lead and critique space vehicle design and analysis efforts
Conceive and develop solutions to complex analytical, design, and test problems that the program may experience
Develop and provide input to the Program Systems Engineering Management Plan
Spacecraft chief technical interface at all scheduled program meetings and reviews
Technical management of the payload interfaces and major bus subcontracted program elements
Planning and conduct of all contractual spacecraft technical reviews
Ensure the spacecraft design satisfies all requirements and interface specifications
Responsible to write monthly status and technical performance reviews and reports
Mentor, guide, direct and advise junior staff

Basic Qualifications:
B.S. in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area and 14+ years of experience; Master’s degree and 12+ years of experience, or PhD and 10+ years of experience
Experience in space systems design, development, manufacture, or test, including 5 years of technical or project leadership positions
Ability to lead a diverse team of subsystem leads and system engineers
Ability to develop and manage system interfaces to integrate multi-element systems
Ability to translate program objectives and customer requirements into system requirements
Experience in requirements development and management processes
Experience in development and maintenance of interface control documents and related processes
Must have US Citizenship with current or active Top Secret Clearance at time of application
Preferred Qualifications:
Active or current TS/SCI Clearance
Knowledge and experience with satellite functions to include attitude control, power management, thermal control, propulsion, command and data handling, flight and ground software.
Experience in space system testing and evaluation (flight and ground testing)
Experience with Mission Operations for spacecraft
Orbital mechanics, orbital debris modeling, spacecraft attitude control, power systems and modeling, avionics or digital electronics design, risk analysis, optics, communications, rocket propulsion, thermal engineering, or spacecraft integration and testing
Knowledge of Launch Vehicles, System Safety, System Reliability, Contamination Control, EMI, Space Environments (Radiation, Surface Charging, etc.), and Human Factors
