SUMMARY

We are looking for an entry level engineer to join the Advanced Materials department at Firefly Aerospace. You will apply your knowledge of material systems to support design, manufacturing and testing activities by the company. Candidates will be considered for either composite or metallic materials, along with their related manufacturing and testing processes.

The candidate must be a self-starter who works well in a team environment and has excellent interpersonal skills. The candidate will form an integral part of a team of engineers and technicians that will be a focal for the company. The candidate will be expected to evaluate new materials, perform failure analysis, provide technical support to departments, customers and suppliers and provide innovative solutions to meet company objectives.

NOTE: While this position is not limited to new graduates, the job will not begin until June 2025.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Evaluate and propose materials which may be used in new or existing designs.
  • Establish test scopes for material characterization and allowables development and identify required equipment or external test resources to carry out this testing.
  • Design, lead and perform related material testing and evaluation, such as microscopy, failure analysis, spectroscopy, mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and corrosion testing.
  • Develop and own material and process specifications in alignment with requirements, capability, and quality needs
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing and design teams in the areas of metallic material and processing selection and optimization, qualification, and inspection that impact product quality, reliability, durability, and capability
  • Write internal reports and technical papers based on testing and research as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • B.S or higher in Materials Science, Aerospace, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or related fields.
  • Knowledge or experience in either metallic or non-metallic materials and/or related manufacturing processes such as welding, heat treat, composite layup, testing, etc.
  • Ability to travel to customers and other Firefly sites up to 25% of the time.

Desired

  • Any experience working with materials or manufacturing processes in an engineering role.
  • Hands on testing experience (Mechanical, thermal analysis, microscopy/failure mode analysis) in a materials or college laboratory.
  • Experience working on Material allowables development programs and statistical analysis
  • Previous experience with a related industry task group or consortium, such as Nadcap, AMS, ASTM or other.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
