Job Summary
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.
We are seeking a visionary and experienced leader to spearhead the development and implementation of our cutting-edge advanced autonomy research and program support. As the Director of Vehicle Autonomy & System Trust (Multi-Disciplinary Engineering), you will guide a team of talented engineers and researchers in building robust, reliable, and safe autonomous systems for diverse missions. This role demands a strong technical foundation coupled with exceptional leadership skills and a passion for pushing the boundaries of innovation in the aerospace industry.
Work Model
This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA or Chantilly, VA offering a Hybrid work model that combines (4) regular onsite workdays and remote flexibility as the business needs allow.
What You’ll Be Doing
Define and execute a strategic roadmap for our advanced autonomy charter, encompassing research, development, testing, and deployment
Lead and inspire a high-performing team of engineers, researchers, and data scientists, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture dedicated to pushing the limits of advanced autonomy, especially for space applications
Oversee the entire system lifecycle, from concept design to launch and operational autonomy, ensuring compliance with mission requirements and safety standards
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (e.g., propulsion, avionics, payload development, ground control) to align autonomous space vehicle technology with overall mission objectives
Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in the field of autonomy, identifying opportunities for engagement internally and with customers and contractors
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements for the Director of Vehicle Autonomy & System Trust (Multi-Disciplinary Engineering) include:
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required
Minimum (10) years of applicable professional experience in one or more of the following areas: including the research and development of autonomous systems or adjacent technologies, including artificial intelligence is required
Deep understanding of spacecraft subsystems, attitude control, navigation systems, and mission planning for space vehicles
Experience in programming languages such as C++, Python, and ROS (Robot Operating System) within the context of spaceflight software
Proven ability to lead and manage large, complex engineering projects with a focus on achieving mission success in challenging environments
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
Advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is preferred
Record of publications or patents in the field of autonomous systems or adjacent technology
Experience working with aerospace manufacturers or government space agencies (NASA, ESA, AFRL, etc.)
Familiarity with relevant spacecraft standards and regulations
Familiarity with artificial intelligence, especially the application of AI in physical systems

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
