Job description
Duties
- Serve as Hazardous Gas Leak Detection subject matter expert for design, development, fabrication, verification and validation testing, troubleshooting, operations, and sustaining engineering.
- Oversee supporting contractor for Artemis operational activities of Hazardous Gas Leak Detection Subsystem which consists of Mass Spectrometry Leak Detection, Remote Gas Leak Detection, and Fire Leak Detection.
- Serve as a senior Hazardous Gas engineer during integrated test and launch countdown of Artemis Flight vehicle including technical requirements, Launch Commit Criteria, and work procedures.
- Support console operations during day-of-launch activities providing real-time system evaluation and technical guidance providing official go/no-go call during launch.
- Provide technical direction to program or project management, government and contractor engineers, and technicians during installation, modification, and checkout of Hazardous Gas Leak Detection Subsystems.
- Provide technical support in the field during surveillance of subsystem operations.
- Develop and/or approve detailed test procedures, conduct tests, evaluate results, and initiate system design modifications to eliminate anomalies.

Qualifications
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:
- Providing hazardous gas and toxic vapor leak detection in one or more of the following areas: Mass Spectrometer Leak Detection, Remote Gas Leak Detection, Hydrogen Fire and Leak Detection, or Transport Vehicle Purge Monitor;
- Providing terminal Launch console monitoring in Hazardous Gas Leak Detection Subsystems executing procedures, verifying Launch Commit Criteria, coordinating extensive post-flight data review, and/or Launch margin verification assessments;
- Participating in the design and development of instrumentation systems to include fabrication, verification and validation testing, troubleshooting, operations, and/or sustaining engineering of those systems.
Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
