Job description
Astranis is on a mission to bridge the digital divide by connecting the four billion people worldwide who currently lack internet access. We're doing this by building the next generation of smaller, more cost-effective spacecraft to bring the world online.
As a team, we’ve launched two satellites into orbit, signed ten commercial deals worth over $1 billion in revenue, raised over $500 million from top global investors, and recruited a team of over 300 world-class engineers. We all work out of our (legendary) San Francisco office, which was once used to build ships during the World Wars.
Our satellites, which operate from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh only 400 kg and utilize a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite can connect over two million people, and we’re very excited for the impact we’ll soon have in the Philippines, Peru, Mexico, and more!
Backed by substantial funding and a passionate, collaborative team, we offer a rewarding work environment where you'll learn and make a significant impact, no matter where you are in your career.
Apply and join us on our journey towards global connectivity!
Aerospace Welder
The Propulsion Production team is looking for a detail-oriented welder who takes pride in the quality of their craftsmanship. As an aerospace welder, you will be responsible for orbital tube welding of propulsion manifolds and components in a cleanroom environment. You will also own welding of ground support equipment and tooling, which will be used for the assembly, integration, and test of geostationary satellites. As needed, you will help with the assembly of spacecraft and other production activities other than welding. Seasoned welders would own the development of welding processes and technically ambitious welding projects. If you want to take your welding skills and level of ownership to the next level, this could be the role for you!
Role:
- Weld and inspect the welds of high purity fluidic propulsion systems (orbital welds on steel tubes and components).
- Operate equipment like an orbital tube welder, helium leak detector, manual TIG welder, drill press, chop saw, and weld fixturing.
- Fabricate and weld ground support equipment and tooling, using MIG and TIG welding on both steel and aluminum.
- Work in a clean room environment with high value hardware, ensuring the highest level of cleanliness and integrity.
- Assure process quality, repeatability, and continuous improvement by working with engineering to make changes to the hardware designs and manufacturing processes.
Requirements:
- 3+ years of OTW and/or TIG welding experience on a variety of materials, including ability to spec equipment and consumables, set up parts, perform welding, and inspect work.
- Experience working in a shop environment with knowledge of how to use fabrication and assembly equipment and tools such as drill press, band saw, hand tools, etc.
- Expertise in developing weld schedules and improving weld processes to meet the specifications of AWS D17.1.
- Demonstrated capabilities in orbital tube welding and working in a high quality manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience working with fluid systems, including cleanliness requirements and cleaning processes.
- Welding and weld inspection certifications.
- Experience with x-ray inspection.
- Experience working with aerospace propulsion systems.
