Job description
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories. Our world-class astronomical research center is based on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Md. (Click here to learn more about our missions).
STScI seeks a Property Accountant to provide maintenance and reconciliation of all Government and AURA property inventory within STScI’s accounting system. Serving as a liaison between auditors and organizational staff, this individual will enhance audit readiness, optimize resource utilization, and streamline operations efficiently.
The Property Accountant facilitates communication between external and internal auditors, monitors audits, and prepares audit schedules. They interact directly with designated property administrators, property custodians, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with requirements. (#10795)
This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the property administrator and IT staff to maintain the accuracy and completeness of the property database, performing analysis, reconciliations, facilitating communication between external and internal auditors, overseeing and monitoring audits, and preparing all necessary audit schedules.
- Support property-related tasks, such as submitting mandated annual and monthly reports to government entities.
- Conduct regular verifications and audits to ascertain the existence and condition of government assets by performing quarterly internal limited scope physical inventory and full scope physical inventory audits, reconciling discrepancies, and updating asset registers accordingly.
- Evaluate risks associated with government property, identify vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and proactively safeguard assets to mitigate audit-related risks.
- Ensures compliance with organizational policies and guidelines, enforce usage protocols, disposal procedures, and ethical practices to align with the institute's missions and policies consistently.
- Document, review, and update property policies and procedures to align with government contractual requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative in completing assignments.
- Proven effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing with all parties.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to maintain accurate property records.
- Previous audit experience.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s or higher degree in accounting field.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in accounting field.
- Proficiency in generally accepted accounting principles.
Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications may be considered.
The salary range for this role is $56-69k annually. The posted salary range represents a general guideline; however, STScI considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, such as internal pay equity, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's experience, education, and skill, and current market conditions.
