Northrop Grumman needs Radiation Effects & Survivability (RES) engineers to team up and help lead the RES design, development, and analysis of complex electronic products for space systems.

At Northrop Grumman Space Systems RES engineering is the impact of the radiation environment upon the operational capability of components, assemblies, equipment, subsystems, systems, and other space platforms.  RES engineers perform radiation effects analysis, shielding analysis, survivability analysis, radiation analysis reporting, simulation of electronic components relative to space radiation effects; electronic protection; hazards of radiation to electronics, materials, and personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Radiation Analysis for satellite payload systems
  • Test plans and test reports for radiation testing of electronic components (e.g. total dose, prompt dose and single event upset)
  • Radiation predictions using NOVICE, SPENVIS, CREME96, OMERE and other radiation analysis tools
  • Radiation effects on material degradation
  • Interface with multiple disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, EMI/EMC/ESD, contamination, procurement, subcontractors, manufacturing, and test
  • Prepare and present technical reports for internal and external customers
  • Present radiation requirements and compliance in program meetings and design reviews (PDR, CDR, etc.)
  • Analyze Single Event Effects, Burnouts, Latchups, Upsets and Transients in electronic circuits
  • Propose Circuit design mitigations to reduce or eliminate risk of Single Event Effects failure
  • Total Ionizing Dose analysis
  • Analyze Displacement Damage Dose impact on optoelectronics
  • Analyze Deep Charging (Internal Electron Flux) applied to spacecraft component boxes and external harnesses
  • Spacecraft radiation shielding & modeling

Basic Qualifications:

This position can be filled at level T3 or T4

Level T3 - Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or closely related technical discipline with 5 years of experience.

Level T4 - Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or closely related technical discipline with 8 years of experience.

  • RES experience
  • Knowledge of physics associated with radiation effects in semiconductor devices
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Must be eligible for Top Secret/SCI Clearance
  • Outstanding time-management and multi-tasking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or closely related technical discipline
  • Experience with radiation tools like NOVICE, AE9AP9, CRÈME, SPENVIS, etc
  • CAD modeling experience with Creo Parametric

Salary Range: $110,300.00 - $165,500.00Salary Range 2: $137,400.00 - $206,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
