Northrop Grumman Space Systems is searching for an experienced Electro Optical Systems Engineering Manager 3 to support the Glide Phase Interceptor Program within the Launch Vehicle business unit in Chandler, AZ.

The Electro Optical Systems Engineering Manager 3 will lead the Electro Optical (EO) imaging systems center of excellence for launch vehicles.

The EO Engineering Manager will work with the Program Managers and other functional engineering leadership in order to coordinate and support the day-to-day activities of the multi-disciplined EO engineering team.  The EO manager will also act as a technical lead, technical contributor, and technical consultant on various projects.  The EO imaging systems engineering manager will also focus attention on the career development needs of the team members.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with program managers and engineering leads to ensure the right people, processes, and tools are in place to meet the business needs.

  • Oversee the supervision of engineering activity and work products, workload management, and performance management process.

  • Function as a key contributor, managing assigned responsibilities and directing the work of the engineers to accomplish goals.

  • Plan manpower requirements as well as conduct quarterly and annual performance reviews of staff.

  • Identify, manage and grow the critical skills development process for the EO team.

  • Motivates team; actively, effectively participates and contributes in a positive manner.

  • Train and mentor early career engineers in EO practices and standards.

  • Makes an extra effort to provide quality internal and external customer service.

  • Work with the engineering team to identify causes of problems and develop solutions.

  • Ensures standard processes, procedures and command media are followed; including Safety, 5S, Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Control, Electrostatic Discharge Control (ESD) control, Tool Control, among others.

  • Evaluating and implementing Lean/agile solutions to decrease cycle times.

  • Identify and/or lead continuous improvement activities within the group.

Technical Skills

-     Understanding and application of the business unit electro-optical imaging engineering technical standards.

  • Broad technical understanding and working knowledge of other related disciplines. Examples: mechanical engineering (interfaces/thermal requirements/structures and mechanisms), GNC (specialized algorithm image process and closed loop control), software engineering (hardware firmware/programming)

  • Strong technical writing skills

  • Understanding of optical system design, analysis, and test practices including optics theory, imaging and processing, optical calibration, and tracking mechanism concepts.

-     Understanding of electro-optical system engineering with the ability to lead and support detailed analysis, design and test.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Optical Sciences and Engineering degree plus 9 years of experience; Master’s in Optical Science degree  plus 7 years of related experience is required.

  • Must have an active U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance at time of application, current and within scope.

  • Strong leadership, influence, and people management skills

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to effectively communicate to all levels of employees, management and customers

  • Travel up to 15% per year, to support design reviews, customer meetings and vendor meetings.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Optical Sciences and Engineering degree plus 15 years of related experience; Master’s  in Optical Science degree plus 10 years of related experience is preferred.

  • Experience as Technical manager, lead, or other similar leadership role with team building, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Experience working on space systems/launch vehicles is a plus.

  • Problem-solving experience in a team environment.

  • Sense of humor, able to laugh at Director’s feeble attempts at ‘jokes’.  Able to tolerate/work with other department managers.

  • Interest in mentoring/teaching/growing early career engineers.

  • Ability to multi-task and apply good time management.

  • Able to exercise influence and lead team to success.

  • Ability to make independent decisions, be self-motivated, possess excellent communications skills, detail-oriented, and team player

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing internal relationships, prioritization, and delegation.

Salary Range: $156,000.00 - $234,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
