Job description
Virgin Galactic is seeking a highly motivated NDT Inspector to support our Quality team. Guided by our values, “Safety above All”, we proactively manage the risks inherent in human spaceflight through our daily actions in the design and assembly efforts.
Primary tasks will be associated with the inspection standards, principles, techniques to examine, question, evaluate and report objective evidence of results in accordance with QMS requirements.
Responsible for accomplishing assigned inspection work on space flight system hardware, assemblies and vehicles by conducting inspections utilizing a variety of NDT methods which may include but are not limited to ultrasonic, penetrant, eddy-current, and thermal/infrared and laser shearography. Maintain focus on timeliness and execution of tasks and deliverables every day. Support the company strategy by holding ourselves and one another accountable for getting the work done.
Work Schedule: 4/10 Onsite Monday through Thursday Day Shift
Responsibilities
- Inspects parts, sub-assemblies and completed assemblies to the extent necessary to determine, accomplish and approve acceptability in accordance with written procedures
- Performs non-destructive tests on Vehicle components following engineering definition
- Properly utilize NDT test equipment and associated tools to successfully interrogate hardware and structures, make decisions as to their acceptability for continued use and keep abreast of new and advanced test equipment
- Continuously practice safety behavior and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) awareness/prevention; adhere to regulatory protocols and rules
- Follow procedures, processes and inspection techniques which may include but are not limited to using various types of ultrasonic, eddy current, fluorescent penetrant equipment
- Accurately interpret and evaluate NDT results according to codes and standards
- Assist with development of procedures and techniques for non-destructive testing of metallic and composite structures
- Report and document inspection results for traceability purposes
- Provide detailed reports to engineers and/or managers to communicate inspection results
- Performs process controls, set up and calibrate equipment; maintain equipment weekly inventory
- Accurately and timely completion of assigned tasks in accordance with the policies and procedures set forth by the company
- Conduct work in a manner that enhances own/other employees health and safety, product safety and promotes risk reduction
- Work on quality control assignments that are moderately difficult, requiring judgment in resolving issues or in making recommendations
- Ensure quality and efficiency of installations, including troubleshooting and may provide guidance in troubleshooting processes and concepts
- Communicate effectively, in both written and verbal formats, with engineering, management and production personnel to convey product acceptance criteria and inspection results
- Work collaboratively to achieve goals and/or complete assigned tasks
- Adhere to set directions and guidelines from team leader to support collaboration across teams to complete project
- Support training of other NDT personnel using hands-on knowledge from the vehicles via different mediums as appropriate
Required Skills and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of three years’ experience with aerospace parts and components and hands‐on experience in a manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), or airline environment with a special emphasis in prototype aircraft; to include material and logistics operations
- Successfully completed minimum training requirements defined in NAS 410, ATA 105, or ASNT-SNT-TC-1A for a Level 2 inspector in UT and PT
- Recent, documented hours, working as an NDT inspector and have obtained sufficient experience to be certified in accordance with NAS 410, ATA 105, or ASNT-SNT-TC-1A
- Ability to read, interpret, and communicate blueprints, specs, and other technical documents
- Strong working knowledge of composite aircraft and/or aerospace non-destructive testing processes in composite material
- Knowledge of AS9100 and other relevant aerospace industry standards and regulations
- Demonstrated ability to use computer applications to follow manufacturing work instructions
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and/or models on paper or digital
- Experience with nonconforming material control processes
- Specific vision abilities (corrected or uncorrected) to include color perception, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus to be able to detect even the smallest of flaws or defects in the materials used
Preffered Skills and Experience
- Training in other NDT methods
- Strong safety forward thinking, practice good housekeeping, tool control, recognizing the importance of properly handling hazardous materials, and chemicals
- Experience on narrow body and/or business jet aircraft
- Experience with composite aircraft (commercial or military aerospace application)
- Proven hands-on inspection experience in the aerospace industry using a variety of precision measurement tools
- Basic math and technical writing skills
- Knowledge of applying current quality control practices and willingness to learn cutting edge spacecraft quality techniques; Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) training preferred
- Ability to collaborate on quality inspection projects with fellow technicians, or interdepartmental functions to achieve goals or solve problems
- Strong safety forward thinking, practice good housekeeping, tool control, recognizing the importance of properly handling hazardous materials, and chemicals
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Familiar with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $49,920.00–$68,640.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
