Duties

Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
Provide expertise in the development of computer applications involving state-of-the-art development tools and computing systems.
Investigate, advise on, and resolve unique or novel problems, conditions, or issues.
Standardize Test Data Package for Data Acquisition System by collaborating with other NASA centers.
Define information to be stored (data, metadata).
Define functional retrieval needs (requirements for restoration on COBRA system for reprocessing, requirements for user exports).
Define Test Data Package structure and Hierarchical Data Format Version 5 (HDF5) format.
Create prototype code for creating Test Data Package in HDF5 from existing recorded data and exporting Comma Separated Values (CVS).

You must meet qualifications, time in grade, and 90 days after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
If the selectee is currently at the GS-13 grade level, they will be detailed at their current grade and step. If the selectee is a current GS-11, they will be temporarily promoted to GS-12; and if a GS-12 then temporarily promoted to GS-13.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level:

Working with and developing computer programs using Python, C++, or similar software programming language
Participating in developing, testing, or evaluating data gathering and processing systems used in laboratories or other facilities
Participating in design or development of engineered systems that include software, networks, and/or processes to solve technical problems.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:

Working and developing computer programs using Python, C++, or similar software programming languages
Developing, testing, or evaluating data gathering and processing systems used in laboratories or other facilities
Performing Data System Engineering conception, planning, specifications, analysis, development, installation, test, modifications, operation, or maintenance of data handling and computing systems for aerospace, aeronautical, or space/earth science research

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.

APPOINTMENT TO THIS POSITION WILL BE TEMPORARY, NOT-TO-EXCEED ONE (1) YEAR with option to extend and cannot be made permanent. This assignment may be terminated at any time. If the assignment is not made permanent, the individual selected may be returned to the same or similar position from which they were promoted/detailed/temporarily reassigned.
