Job description
Wyvern is making something big. Our vision is to provide actionable intelligence from space, anywhere in the solar system. To achieve this we need to entirely reimagine how satellite Earth observation is done.
We are a rapidly growing space company in Western Canada, powered by humans who are passionate about space and building a better Earth, from space.
If you're excited by the prospect of being part of the space industry and want to operate satellites that makes a difference now...
WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON
Wyvern is developing better telescopes to capture better hyperspectral imagery from space. Hyperspectral images contain more colours than other types of imagery, meaning these images capture the spectral signature of your crop or forest, for example.
We are looking for a Calibration and Validation Scientist to improve imagery both radiometrically and geometrically. This role will have a strong focus on evolving the satellite imagery into a continuously better product. Further accountabilities include the ability to regularly navigate complex issues, learn and/or develop new techniques, be able to work across disciplines, as well as work with software developers to implement new algorithms.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
This role is suited to individuals who like exploring better ways to do things. Someone who can think outside the traditional patterns and find something that works well in multiple situations. This role will need someone who can navigate complex problems and work with others to implement them.
A minimum of 2 years of experience in radiometric and/or geometric calibration of satellites on orbit
Direct experience with Earth Observation image analysis, and GIS systems
Completion of an Undergraduate degree or higher in Mathematics, Physical Sciences Remote Sensing, , Engineering, or equivalent with some work experience
Proficiency Statistical Analysis, and Mathematics in the application of calibration techniques and translating into Python scripts
Experience writing clear and thorough reports and documents discussing complex algorithms and technical performance for multiple audiences
Experience developing solutions to improve image quality
Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote environment
Comfortable and proficient in achieving results within in a fast paced, dynamic working environment while balancing both professional expertise and humility

Familiarity with git, QGIS/ArcGIS, ENVI, MODTRAN/6S or other RTMs, machine learning, cloud-based architecture, and research and development
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Plan and gather ground calibration data and formulate base radiometric corrections
Work with the operations team to design and implement on-orbit radiometric experiments and identify radiometric and geometric targets for observation
Manage long term calibration of an optical sensor and platform end-to-end (apply radiometric and atmospheric corrections and do geometric calculations) and to validate the calibration following known methodologies used by ESA, USGS, and others
Evaluate the basic metrics for an image including SNR, MTF, and CE90
Integrate the calibration techniques into the image processing pipeline by engaging with the software team
Work with other teams at Wyvern to answer complex questions within your area(s) of expertise
Research topics and offer opinions of relevance
Complete consistent and accurate documentation of all work as required
