Location
ESAC, Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain

Description

The European Space Agency maintains a world-leading Science Programme with missions in heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics and fundamental physics. Its mission is to 'Empower Europe to lead space science'.

The Science Operations Department (SCI-S) within ESA's Directorate of Science hosts the scientists and engineers that oversee the space missions from study to end of operations. It develops the science operation systems for the missions and operates the missions in space, as well as archiving and curating their data during operations and beyond. Its main objective is to maximise the scientific output of the missions for the benefit of humankind.

As Science Operations Scientist, you will be part of the EnVision Science Operations Centre reporting to the EnVision Science Operations Development Manager and will coordinate science planning activities throughout the various mission phases. In particular, you will be the main scientific interface for science operations with the EnVision stakeholders in the science community, ensuring that their science goals are properly translated into operational requirements, and fulfilled throughout the implementation and execution of the mission’s science operations.

EnVision will be the first mission to investigate Venus from its inner core to its upper atmosphere, characterising the interaction between its different envelopes: its atmosphere, surface/subsurface and interior. It aims to provide a holistic view of Venus, studying the planet’s history, activity and climate. EnVision is targeting a launch in the early 2030s.

Duties

You will be responsible for various aspects of the planning and execution of instrument and science operations, working in close collaboration with the Project Scientist, the Archive Scientist and the Science Operations Centre (SOC) Team, in addition to acting as the interface between the SOC and the Instrument Teams.

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • supporting the Instrument Teams in defining their science operations strategies, as well as providing support on science operations matters including the definition of operations requests, analysis of operational constraints, science operations planning and science operations analysis;
  • coordinating the interaction between the SOC and the Instrument Teams for science operations matters, making sure that the instrument science planning and calibration requirements are properly formulated and understood by the Development and Engineering Teams and that long-term operational knowledge is preserved;
  • acting as a ‘Product owner’ if an Agile development strategy is pursued for the SOC system, providing the feedback, value and user acceptance testing of the different science operations functionalities;
  • supporting the development of strategic/long-term science planning for optimising the science return within the mission’s constraints and its conversion into instrument timelines;
  • supporting instrument commissioning and calibration activities;
  • interfacing with the EnVision Project Scientist and providing support to the overall evaluation of the mission’s science performance;
  • supporting outreach activities promoting the EnVision mission and its science;
  • participating in instrument reviews and peer reviews of science data;
  • providing support to the definition and validation of the instrument’s data products in coordination with the Archive Scientist, and supporting the development and evolution of the instrument quick-look/data analysis software.

Your position is expected to also involve support for other planetary missions in development in the Division, such as the Juice mission that will explore the Jupiter system and study the habitability of its icy moons using remote sensing and in situ measurements.

In addition to the above duties, you will be expected to continue to carry out research in planetary sciences and actively contribute to the scientific life of the Department.
