Job description

Role Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing space startup and play a key role in the development of cutting-edge satellite technology. The NewOrbit Graduate Program is designed to nurture the next generation of space engineers, offering you the chance to develop your skills, build your network, and contribute to groundbreaking projects that will shape the future of space exploration.

As a NewOrbit Mechanical Engineer, youโ€™ll be part of a dynamic and innovative team working on advanced mechanical systems for our pioneering air-breathing electric propulsion technology. Over the course of two years, you will rotate through various assignments, gaining hands-on experience across different technical areas and contributing to real-world projects.

About NewOrbit Space

NewOrbit is pioneering the development of the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) system to be trialed in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO). Our mission is to harness atmospheric particles as propellant, enabling long-duration missions in these challenging orbits while providing groundbreaking benefits to satellite applications.

Please note: This is not a regular 9-5 job, as we are an early-stage startup. You are expected to have the ability to work extended hours on-site.

Responsibilities:

Rotational Assignments: Participate in a structured development program, gaining exposure to multiple technical domains, including:

  • Mechanical Systems Design: Assist in the design and development of mechanical components and systems for satellite applications, focusing on structural integrity, thermal management, and reliability.

  • Propulsion System Integration: Support the integration of mechanical systems within air-breathing propulsion technology, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance.

  • Testing and Validation: Collaborate on the testing and validation of mechanical systems, analyzing performance data to ensure compliance with mission requirements.

  • Satellite Operations: Help monitor and optimize mechanical systems in orbit, gaining insights into real-time space operations and their challenges.

  • Skill Development: Enhance your technical and professional skills through hands-on experience, mentoring, and training sessions.

  • Project Contribution: Apply your knowledge to solve complex challenges, contribute to innovative technology, and play a role in the successful deployment of our satellite missions.

Fundamental Requirements:

  • Educational Background: A degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Mechanical Engineering Background: Experience in university projects involving mechanical systems, an interest in space engineering, and a desire to contribute to the future of satellite technology.

  • Hands-On Experience: Practical experience in mechanical prototyping, lab work, and testing is essential.

Why NewOrbit

  • Pioneering Space Technology: Join NewOrbit and contribute to the development and launch of groundbreaking technology that will redefine satellite operations in ultra-low Earth orbits.

  • Impact and Ownership: Experience a rare level of involvement in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development, with opportunities to influence mission-critical systems.

  • Equity and Competitive Salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes, rewarding dedication and hard work with a tangible stake in the companyโ€™s success.

Application Process

Our interview process consists of four stages. The initial stage involves a call with Alex, followed by two interviews with our founders, Anatolii and Ruslan. If you progress successfully through these stages, you will be invited to complete a set of technical tasks, which will be reviewed and discussed during the fourth and final interview. If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
