Job description

Role Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing space startup and play a crucial role in the development and operation of our pioneering satellite missions. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Satellite Flight Dynamics Engineer to support the planning, execution, and analysis of satellite trajectories and maneuvers, including the innovative air-breathing electric propulsion system for our Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO) missions.

As part of the NewOrbit team, you will work in a dynamic environment, supporting mission operations from launch to de-orbit, ensuring the success and safety of our satellites throughout their lifecycle.

About NewOrbit Space

NewOrbit is pioneering the development of the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) system to be trialed in ULEO. Operating in ULEO offers game-changing benefits to satellite applications, but it requires a propulsion system that can counteract drag from atmospheric particles. Our mission is to harness these particles as propellant, enabling long-duration missions in these challenging orbits.

Please note that this is not a regular 9-5 job, but that we are an early stage start-up.

Responsibilities:

  • Trajectory analysis: Provide comprehensive study and calculations for all phases of spacecraft operations in ultra-low orbits, from launch to mission execution to de-orbit. This includes orbit determination, maneuver planning, trajectory analysis, missed thrust analysis and attitude control.

  • Maneuver Planning: Design and verify satellite maneuvers that utilize air-breathing electric propulsion systems, including orbit raising and station keeping at ultra-low orbits, as well as investigating the density variation impact on the trajectory of the satellite.

  • Flight Dynamics Operations: Operate and maintain flight dynamics software and tools, ensuring accurate and reliable orbit and attitude calculations. Provide real-time operational support, including on-console activities during critical mission phases.

  • System Configuration and Troubleshooting: Configure, operate, and troubleshoot flight dynamics systems and software, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operations. Resolve technical issues promptly and effectively.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Produce detailed documentation for flight dynamics procedures, software operations, and mission outcomes. Maintain accurate records of all activities and analyses.

Fundamental Requirements:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Industry Experience: Relevant experience in satellite flight dynamics, including orbit determination, maneuver planning, and attitude control. Experience with satellite launch campaigns and operational missions is a plus.

  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency with flight dynamics software and tools such as GMAT, OREKIT, STK, or FreeFlyer. Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or FORTRAN, and experience with Unix/Linux OS-based systems.

  • Operational Experience: Hands-on experience in an operational environment, particularly in mission operations, orbit control, and collision avoidance. Familiarity with operational training and support for pre-launch activities.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong background in mathematics, mechanics, and dynamics, with the ability to predict and analyze the behavior of complex systems.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise documentation and effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Requirements:

  • Problem-Solving: A proactive and analytical mindset, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in real-time operational environments.

  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing mission requirements and the ability to work under pressure during critical mission phases.

Why NewOrbit

  • Pioneering Space Technology: Join NewOrbit and contribute to the development and launch of groundbreaking technology that will redefine satellite operations in ultra-low

  • Earth orbits.

  • Impact and Ownership: Experience a rare level of involvement in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development, with opportunities to influence mission-critical systems.

  • Equity and Competitive Salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes, rewarding dedication and hard work with a tangible stake in the company’s success.

Application Process

Our interview process consists of four stages. The initial stage involves a call with Alex, followed by two interviews with our founders, Anatolii and Ruslan. If you progress successfully through these stages, you will be invited to complete a set of technical tasks, which will be reviewed and discussed during the fourth and final interview. If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
