Job description
Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing space startup and play a key role in the development of cutting-edge satellite technology. The NewOrbit Graduate Program is designed to nurture the next generation of space engineers, offering you the chance to develop your skills, build your network, and contribute to groundbreaking projects that will shape the future of space exploration.
As a NewOrbit Graduate Engineer, you’ll be part of a dynamic and innovative team working on our pioneering air-breathing electric propulsion systems for satellites operating in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO). Over the course of two years, you will rotate through various assignments, gaining hands-on experience across different technical areas and contributing to real-world projects.
About NewOrbit Space
NewOrbit is pioneering the development of the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) system to be trialed in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO). Operating in ULEO offers game-changing benefits to satellite applications, but it requires a propulsion system that can counteract drag from atmospheric particles. Our mission is to harness these particles as propellant, enabling long-duration missions in these challenging orbits.
Please note that this is not a regular 9-5 job, but that we are an early stage start-up.
Responsibilities:
Rotational Assignments: Participate in a structured development program, gaining exposure to multiple technical domains, including:
Satellite Engineering: Contribute to the design and development of satellite systems, including propulsion, power, and communication subsystems.
Air-Breathing Propulsion Systems: Assist in the research, development, and testing of our innovative propulsion technology, focusing on air-intake and rarefied gas dynamics.
Satellite Operations: Help monitor, control, and optimize satellites in orbit, learning the intricacies of real-time space operations.
Systems Integration and Testing: Collaborate on the integration and testing of satellite systems to ensure they meet mission requirements.
Skill Development: Enhance your technical and professional skills through hands-on experience, mentoring, and training sessions.
Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, sharing your ideas and learning from experienced engineers and scientists.
Project Contribution: Apply your knowledge to solve complex challenges, contribute to innovative technology, and play a role in the successful deployment of our satellite missions.
Fundamental Requirements:
Educational Background: A degree level or equivalent in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
Space Technology Background: Experience in university satellite and propulsion projects, interest in space engineering and a desire to contribute to the future of satellite technology. Ideally we’re looking for a candidate who worked with plasma propulsion systems.
Hands-On Experience: Hands-on experience with building things, working in the lab and working with electronics is a requirement.
Teamwork: A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Problem-Solving: A systematic, logical, and critical approach to solving technical challenges, with attention to detail.
Adaptability: Flexibility and a proactive approach to learning, with a commitment to personal and professional development.
Why NewOrbit
Pioneering Space Technology: Join NewOrbit and contribute to the development and launch of groundbreaking technology that will redefine satellite operations in ultra-low Earth orbits.
Impact and Ownership: Experience a rare level of involvement in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development, with opportunities to influence mission-critical systems.
Equity and Competitive Salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes, rewarding dedication and hard work with a tangible stake in the company’s success.
Application Process
Our interview process consists of four stages. The initial stage involves a call with Alex, followed by two interviews with our founders, Anatolii and Ruslan. If you progress successfully through these stages, you will be invited to complete a set of technical tasks, which will be reviewed and discussed during the fourth and final interview. If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
