Job description
At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.
Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.
About the Team:
The Avionics team is responsible for all aspects of the electrical design on the rocket, from electronics, interconnects, associated mechanical design, testing and initial production. This team's scope includes the flight computers, power systems, RF systems, PCB design, autonomous flight safety systems, and telemetry. This team works on complex electrical systems that require modularity and flexibility, and are critical to the successful launch of Terran R, and beyond!
About the Role:
As a Lead of Avionics Manufacturing Engineering, you will play a crucial role in developing and guiding the manufacturing team while defining key projects, goals, and initiatives. Your expertise in lean manufacturing will be essential in identifying production gaps and inefficiencies, advocating for the implementation of tools, systems, and processes that enhance overall performance. You will be responsible for driving continuous improvement across the production floor, ensuring that the team meets high standards of quality and efficiency. Your leadership will be vital in optimizing manufacturing workflows, reducing waste, mentoring the growing engineering team, and achieving operational excellence.
About You:
- Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on build and test of electromechanical systems.
- 1+ years of leadership experience in managing and mentoring engineering teams, with a track record of driving operational excellence through new product introductions.
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturability, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Failure Mode Effects Analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and address production inefficiencies, implement process improvements, and optimize manufacturing workflows.
- Familiarity with soldering, harnessing, or test standards such as IPC or J-STD or similar.
Nice to haves but not required:
- 7+ years of experience in avionics manufacturing or aerospace systems, with a background in production optimization.
- Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent expertise in continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience standing up high-volume production processes and tracking systems.
- Experience success in leading large-scale projects and initiatives that significantly improved production efficiency, quality, and cost savings.
