INTEGRATED OPERATIONS ENGINEER II - TEST & LAUNCH SYSTEMS

We're seeking an experienced Integrated Operations Engineer II to join our elite Launch Pad Systems team. As part of our Integrated Operations organisation, you'll play a crucial role in preparing and executing our groundbreaking space missions.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

As part of the Launch Pad Systems team, you'll be responsible for the operation of Launch Pads and propellant loading systems for the launch of Electron.

The team are specialists in:

  • Pressurised systems
  • Hazardous/cryogenic fluid systems
  • HVAC
  • Hydraulics
  • Industrial instrumentation and control systems

Team Z own operational roles that manipulate the Electron vehicle on the pad, fill it with propellant and condition/configure it for flight. They operate the ‘Stage zero’ of the Electron Launch system, and are additionally responsible for the operation of other research and development test campaigns for both Neutron and Space Systems vehicles. Team Z operators are highly trained console operators providing command and control capabilities to the Rocket Lab ground equipment in support of rocket test and launch operations.

Integrated Operations are responsible for flight article Test and Launch operations, which include:

  • Electron launch operations
    • Integrated Stage hotfire acceptance testing
    • Payload Processing
    • Launch Pad/Test facility configuration and readiness
    • On-console launch operations
    • Mission closeout

Integrated operations are also responsible for Integrated System development test campaigns, for upcoming projects such as the Neutron integrated hardware development test campaign, Space Systems’ Flight article acceptance hot fires and Operational Tools development. 

Integrated Operations Testing and Launch Operations may be conducted remotely or on-site at propulsion test facilities, at Mission Control based in Auckland, or Range Control at one of our two Launch Pad locations, Mahia, NZ, or Wallops Island, VA.

In this role you will be serving as an on-console in Launch and Test Operations, primarily in support of Ground Systems roles, but additionally with the opportunity to be skilled in vehicle-side and command roles. Day to day you'll routinely mentor and train other operators in the safe and effective operation of systems, and take leadership roles in improvements to procedures, processes and operational tools that improve the quality, reliability, and launch rate of Electron and other products.

YOU’LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, mechanical, electrical, mechatronic engineering degree or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in high performance and/or industrial engineering design, test and/or operations
  • Ability to read, understand and follow detailed schematics, drawings, and instructions
  • Self-driven, motivated, and contagiously positive
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships
  • Careful work ethic with an eye for detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
THESE WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in high performance/industrial engineering test or operations
  • Demonstrated experience working in safety/mission-critical, high-stress environments
  • Experience working with hazardous (high pressure, cryogenic, toxic, flammable etc) systems
  • Experience working on-console in a real-time operations environment, including plant/vehicle operations 
  • Experience working with launch vehicles or spacecraft including integration, testing, launch, and/or on-console mission operations
  • Experience with Java, Python, or other programming language
  • Experience with LabVIEW and PLC development
