Job description
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.
In this position you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and testing of fluid systems for rockets! You will engage in all levels of the design cycle including conceptual design, requirements definition, thermo-fluid modeling, structural layout and analysis, integration, test and mission support. You will use creative thinking and novel manufacturing solutions to tackle sophisticated problems with various fluids systems which include high pressure gas, cryogenic propellant, post combustion product and highly stressed hardware.
We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Responsibilities:
Design and route sophisticated fluid subsystems
Strong understanding of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
Work with fluid components (i.e., solenoid valves, pneumatic valves, regulators, pumps, instrumentation, etc)
Author component specifications and handle suppliers through design, development, qualification and delivery of flight hardware
Work closely with other groups to ensure your systems work together, resolving issues with calculated risk
Following design efforts, you will lead and participate in component and system level testing and data analysis
To be successful in this role good project management skills are vital including vendor management, scheduling, and budget tracking
Work with REFPROP, SINDA/FLUINT and Thermal Desktop or other fluid modeling software
Work with 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs (ANSYS Preferred)
Deliver completed designs using the best draft practicing per ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards along with clear and well detailed analysis reports
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering
3+ Years of proven experience with spacecraft or launch vehicle fluid system component design or test
Experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles in the detail design of aerospace or equivalent type fluid systems and components
Proven understanding of fluid components such as valves, pressure vessels, flex elements and fittings
Knowledge of fabrication, integration processes and quality control relative to tubes/piping and machined components
Solid understanding of materials and treatments
Experience fixing fluids hardware
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
