Job description

Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

We are looking for a passionate data scientist to join our Data Science teams focusing on Agriculture, Water and Climate domains. Our mission is to provide high quality validated markers that enable us and our partners to extract insights from dense temporal stacks of satellite imagery.  Our team works with multi-sensor earth observations data, developing workflows that extract insights from Planet’s unique constellation and public data sources. From data collected by satellites orbiting the Earth, our algorithms can tell when farmers have plowed or mowed their fields or meadows, the land cover of a particular area of interest, or what type of crop is being grown. We track and monitor large areas, and extract other valuable information in fields of agriculture, land management, real estate, climate changes and others. We work closely with selected customers to shorten the feedback look. You will contribute by developing reliable, scalable, and science-based methods using time series of satellite-based signals. As a member of this team, you will have the opportunity to work with an experienced team of scientists and engineers, experiment with deploying your models at scale, and iterate with feedback from clients and partners. Our team nurtures collaborative culture and is distributed remotely across the EU.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Develop algorithms and machine learning models to extract insights from satellite imagery time series and satellite imagery.
  • Collaborate with the team to iteratively build solutions based on our platform and existing data building blocks.
  • Inspire and enable our partners to extract insights using our platform.
  • Implement models as efficient python code that can be deployed at scale.
  • Document and organize your work to be transparent and repeatable.
  • Write (internal) research reports, public blog posts and reports for clients.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, data science or other STEM fields.
  • Solid understanding of machine learning
  • 2+ years of experience writing Python code
  •  Experience with version control and Git
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Proactiveness and self-initiative
  • Ability to write maintainable and well-documented code
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Experience with cloud environments
  • Remote sensing expertise

Benefits While Working at Planet:

  • Additional company winter holidays and regular global days off
  • Remote friendly work environment and flexible working hours
  • Contribution to our growth by offering equity options for employees
  • Giving back to the community - one day per quarter for charitable work
  • Tuition Reimbursement and access to LinkedIn Learning
  • Regular hack-weeks and meetup events to exchange knowledge
  • Home office budget
  • Employee Resource Groups providing empowering spaces for connection and mentorship
