Optical Systems Engineer

Odysseus Space is looking for a full-time Optical Systems engineer, who will help Odysseus Space achieve its goals, in collaboration with the rest of the team. The engineer will join our headquarters in Luxembourg. Fluency in English, theoretical and hands-on experience in photonics and fiber-based optical systems engineering is required for the position.

About us

Odysseus Space opened in Luxembourg in 2019 and is developing its Cyclops laser communication solution to bring lightspeed connectivity from Space to ground. Starting from Low Earth Orbit, the company aims at connecting any point in the Solar System to the Earth. With Odysseus Space entering a new phase of diversification of our laser communication projects for commercial and defence applications, we are searching for motivated professionals to join our young & international team to work on the next-generation commercial products that will shape the space missions of tomorrow.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible of fibre optic subsystem architecture and validation, for high bitrate (i.e. > 5 Gbps).

• Collaborate with other departments to define electrical, mechanical, software and optical interfaces for commercial and defence projects .

• Breadboarding activities, use of complex laboratory equipment, in the optical & electrical domain.

• Preparing and performing functional and environmental tests, analysis and reporting the results.

• Perform technology trade-offs and technical analyses.

• Assembly, Integration & Testing of flight model laser subsystem.

• Support system level and sub-system level testing, including lab, field and on-orbit tests.

The right candidate

• Holds a master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field, with a minimum of 3 years of experience.

• Has a strong background in complex multi-physics, photonics centered systems, fiber-based optical systems design and/or experimentation with an affinity towards first-principles thinking.

• Has background in one or more of the following topics: free space optical communication systems, fibre optic systems, photonics systems development and testing.

• Has experience in building and operating optical benches (free space and fibre based) with visible and NIR lasers including RF devices and instruments.

• Has experience with scripting languages (python, matlab) for measurement data processing.

• Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and has high standards in the execution of tasks.

• Is familiar with Microsoft Office suite and Teams or is able to get acquainted in a fast manner.

• Is an outstanding verbal and written communicator in English with great interpersonal skills, and has experience writing quality technical documentation.

• Is a reliable and fun colleague to work with.

• Is highly organized and capable of planning and guiding complex technical work.
