Summary
We have a current opportunity for a Staff Materials & Process Engineer for space hardware applications located at our facility in Goleta, CA. In this role you will provide M&P and Specialty Engineering support to multiple customer programs and R&D as well as provide expertise in the development and qualification of space hardware materials.  In this role you will work on a variety of program tasks ranging from M&P, test plan creation and test execution, Specialty Engineering including reliability, radiation, contamination, material outgassing, etc.  You will have the opportunity to work on projects of all sizes including such high-profile programs as International Space Station and Gateway Lunar Space Station Solar Arrays.
 
Responsibilities
  • Provide Materials and Process Engineering and Specialty Engineering support to deployable space solar arrays
  • Evaluate and select materials, parts, finishes, and processes for survivability in space environments, including thermal extremes, radiation exposure, plume exposure, contamination, and component outgassing
  • Evaluate mission requirements and generate Parts, Material and Process Lists and reports
  • Lead trade studies for the selection of materials and processes for space flight hardware
  • Write materials, process, and test specifications for use in the manufacture of the space components
  • Generate qualification test plans, oversee test article manufacturing and testing and create detailed reports documenting test results
  • Perform materials related anomaly and failure investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions by the inspection, analysis and testing of parts.
  • Research, test, and analyze different materials and processes for use in a variety of space environments.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings and documents in accordance with mission specifications to assist in fabrication, assembly, testing of system parts and assemblies.
  • Develop and maintain approved and prohibited materials and processes documentation
  • Create custom test fixtures to support unique testing configurations
  • Actively participate in technical reviews, including engineering design reviews, failure review boards, test readiness reviews, etc.
  • Research, test, and analyze different materials and processes for use in a variety of space environments.
 
Ideal Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, physics, mathematics, or other space-related discipline with 8-10 years of experience, a Master’s degree with 6-8 years of experience or a PhD with 3-5 years  of experience
  • Experience working on spacecraft systems
  • Experienced in selection of materials, finishes and processes for space-based applications
  • Experience with qualification of parts, materials and processes for space applications
  • Experience developing and managing material qualification test campaigns
  • Skilled in identifying noncompliant materials/processes within complex systems
  • Experience in processing data from environmental tests such as vibration, thermal cycling and/or thermal-vacuum testing.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods for fast proof-of-concept development.
  • Hands-on experience in space, small satellites, and/or space-based deployable structures.
  • Experience with Space/Aerospace industry standards (e.g. NASA, IEEE, AIAA, ASTM, MIL Specs)
  • Excellent verbal, written, organization and presentation skills
  • US citizenship is required, with the ability to obtain a security clearance
 
Desired Skills:
  • Intimately familiar with the hazards of the space environment and experienced with the selection of materials and process for robust space hardware.
  • Basic proficiency in CAD programs (Inventor, Solidworks, ProE, etc)
  • Basic familiarity with numerical methods and data processing (MATLAB, Python, etc)
  • Ability to work mostly independently with minimal supervision
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to interface with the team and organization and prioritize tasks, projects, and personnel from a variety of disciplines

Pay Range
$130,000 - $175,000/yr.
 
How We Determine What We Pay (Compensation Philosophy)
Redwire determines pay for positions using local, national, and industry-specific survey data, for our locations throughout the US. We will evaluate external equity and the cost of labor/prevailing wage index, in the relative marketplace for jobs directly comparable to jobs within our company.
 
For new hires, we strive to make competitive offers allowing the new employee room for future growth.  Salaries will be based on the applicant’s level of experience, education, and specialized knowledge and skills. Additionally, we consider the external market rate, the amount we have budgeted internally, and internal equity within the company for the same position. An employee/candidate with a stronger skill set will receive higher pay.
