Mission of the Position

The Starlab AMS Responsible Engineer will lead the development and implementation of the most extensive and complicated ECLSS system on a human spacecraft. This position has technical accountability and oversight of the nominated Project Managers. This position reports directly to the Starlab ECLSS Project Manager. The primary output of the role is a the fully integrated operational Starlab System including all segments, tailored into deliverables, as defined by the program milestones (NASA SAA and Starlab internal).

Essential Duties

  • Subject Matter Expert in spacecraft AMS design, development, manufacture test, and operations.  The successful candidate takes personal ownership of ensuring the Starlab AMS progresses technically through the program lifecycle phases on schedule and on budget.
  • Lead development and maturation of the Starlab AMS in alignment with the overall ECLSS architecture established by the ECLSS Project Manager.
  • Lead the technical execution of an AMS team that is comprised of other Starlab engineers, partner organization engineers, and hardware suppliers to the established program schedule.
  • Generate technical content for AMS Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposal (RFP) campaigns.
  • Perform technical and cost assessments of supplier RFI and RFP responses and provide source selection recommendations to the ECLSS Project Manager.
  • Lead development of a minimum but sufficient set of AMS Requirements and support development of the overarching ECLSS requirements.
  • Ensure AMS technical documentation is routinely completed daily and consistent with established Starlab ECLSS processes.
  • Ensure AMS Safety related data products, including deliverables for the gated Safety Review Process, are completed to the required maturity level and on schedule.
  • Support Crew Systems and Mission Operations in the development of Emergency and Contingency Operations that involve AMS subsystems and hardware.
  • Lead maturation of the AMS Architecture consistent with the established ECLSS decomposition and including but not limited to spatial packaging, development of schematics, and engineering budgets, (mass, power, volume, etc.).
  • Ensure all interfaces to other vehicle subsystems (including but not limited to C&DH, EPS, TCS, Structures, other ECLSS systems, and the Crew) are successfully identified, documented, negotiated, and ultimately agreed to with the other parties via establishment of released Interface Control Documents.
  • In alignment with overall program processes, ensure AMS Command and Control Software Design and Implementation are fully developed and incorporated into the AMS architecture and hardware.
  • Organize and oversee the execution of AMS design and analysis tasks that you or other AMS engineers perform.
  • Support Development of the various plans (e.g. Modeling and Analysis, Verification and Validation, AI&T, Logistics, etc.) and ensure AMS-related tasks and products are performed and generated in alignment with the released plans.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No direct supervisory responsibilities but the successful candidate will provide input to the ECLSS Project Manager on the performance of ECLSS engineers assigned to work AMS tasks

Competencies

Education: 

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree from a four-year college or university is required (other degrees may be considered based upon overall career experience and demonstrated capabilities). 

 

Experience:

  • Fifteen (15) + years’ related experience required, less may be considered if the candidate is otherwise outstanding
  • Leadership experience in at least three of the following ECLSS spaceflight hardware life cycle phases (design and development, manufacture, test, and operations)
  • Experience with software packages and collaboration tools such as Confluence, Box, and Jama is preferred but not required
