Maxar Space Systems has a Machinist role open based in our Palo Alto, CA location.  In this role you will be responsible for operating and programming complex machine tools to produce precision components in accordance with technical drawings and specifications. This role requires an in-depth understanding of machining processes, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. The  Machinist will also be responsible for maintaining equipment, ensuring product quality, and continuously improving machining processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Machining Operations:

  • Set up and operate lathes, mills, and grinders.
  • Interpret complex technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models to determine machining requirements.
  • Select appropriate tools, fixtures, and materials for machining tasks.
  • Perform precise machining operations to produce parts that meet or exceed specifications.

Quality Control:

  • Inspect and measure finished products using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, gauges) to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections to maintain high-quality standards.
  • Identify and correct machining errors to minimize waste and rework.

Equipment Maintenance:

  •   Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to machine operation and tooling.
  •  Coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs and preventive maintenance as needed.

Process Improvement:

  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize machining processes.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance productivity and reduce cycle times.
  • Stay updated on the latest machining technologies and techniques.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while operating machinery.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in safety training and contribute to a safe working environment.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of machining operations, including setup sheets, tool changes, and inspection results.
  • Report production data, issues, and improvements to supervisors and engineering teams.
  • Assist in the development and documentation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Must be a US Citizen or permanent resident
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a machinist

Preferred Skills:

  • Technical certification or associate degree in machining, manufacturing, or related field
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, materials, and tool selection.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments and quality control practices.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials and equipment, typically up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, machinery, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

Our salary ranges are market-driven and set to allow for flexibility. Individual pay will be competitive based on a candidate’s unique set of knowledge, skills, and geographic diversity, with earnings potential commensurate with experience. The range for this position is:

$34.50 - $57.50 hourly.
