Summary
 
We have a current opportunity for an Optical Engineer located at our facility in Marlborough, MA. The Optical Engineer is a multifaceted role working with the engineering team to implement and test visible and SWIR optics-based system components and test systems for Redwire’s Star Tracker and Camera systems.  You will be directly involved in the implementation of optical systems for space-based applications as well as the specification, design, and implementation of tests for said systems.  This work will include interacting with high performance lenses, stray-light baffling systems, and custom test facilities for Redwire star trackers and camera applications.  Test involves both the qualification and acceptance test needs to ensure the design meets specifications and manufacturing performance metrics.  In this role, you will be directly interfacing with customers to present and defend our optics solutions and their performance in meeting mission requirements.    
 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team on research and development of Redwire’s optics, camera, and baffle systems.
  • Develop test facilities and analysis tool required for optics performance verification.
  • Validate test concepts for Redwire developed optical solutions.
  • Work with verification and manufacturing test teams to turn concepts into working systems.
  • Use a first-principles approach to interpret and analyze physical systems.

Ideal Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 2 or more years’ of experience or a Master’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience in Physics or related field.
  • Strong background in mathematics and physics as it pertains to light and refraction.
  • Experience in design, engineering, and testing for engineering/physics applications.
  • Hands-on skill in optical instrumentation and metrology.
  • Experience with image sensors and sensor processing.

Desired Skills

  • Understanding of advanced mathematics and its application in radiometric and optical systems.
  • Understanding of the design and application of camera optics.
  • Understanding of the principles around stray light rejection with baffle systems.
  • Experienced with Matlab or Python.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
