Job description

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Test Technician to support our test engineers in the development and execution of tests for solid rocket motors. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with testing procedures and equipment, as well as a strong commitment to safety and quality. This role involves assisting in the setup, operation, and maintenance of test equipment. This position will handle energetic/explosive materials. Ensuring that all tests are conducted in accordance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements is critical.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Test Support and Execution:
    • Work cohesively with test engineering in the preparation, setup, and execution of tests for solid rocket motors, including handling and installation of test hardware, energetic materials, and instrumentation.
    • Operate and calibrate test equipment, including pressure gauges, temperature sensors, and data acquisition systems.
    • Assist in the building of test articles in conjunction with SRM Engineering guidance.
    • Monitor test conditions and perform routine checks to ensure equipment and test setups are functioning correctly.
  2. Safety Compliance:
    • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures for working with solid rocket motors and associated test materials, including proper handling, storage, and disposal.
    • Participate in safety briefings and training sessions to stay updated on best practices and safety regulations.
    • Report any safety hazards or incidents immediately to the Test Engineer or EHS and assist in incident investigations and corrective actions.
  3. Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Record test data accurately and systematically, ensuring data integrity and proper documentation.
    • Assist in the preliminary analysis of test results, identifying any anomalies or issues that may require further investigation.
    • Maintain detailed logs of test activities, equipment usage, and maintenance.
  4. Equipment Maintenance:
    • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of test equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment issues, and coordinate with maintenance teams for more complex repairs.
    • Ensure that all test equipment and tools are in good working condition and properly stored after use.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Prepare and maintain detailed records of test setups, procedures, and results.
    • Assist in the preparation of test reports, including summarizing data and highlighting key findings.
    • Ensure compliance with all documentation standards and quality control procedures.
  6. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with test engineers and other team members to ensure smooth coordination and execution of test programs.
    • Communicate effectively with team members regarding test procedures, equipment status, and any issues encountered during testing.

Requirements:

  • Preferred Education: Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or professional certification/license.  Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a test technician working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment that incorporates tight tolerances and attention to detail. Experience with solid rocket motor testing is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with test equipment and procedures for solid rocket motors, including understanding of safety protocols for handling energetics and hazardous materials. Ability to read and follow Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
  • Skills: Strong technical skills with the ability to operate and troubleshoot test equipment. Ability to use MS Office and learn ERP/MES systems as well as engineering software. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Certifications: Relevant safety certifications (e.g., HAZMAT, OSHA) are preferred. Certification in explosive materials handling is a plus.
  • Other: Ability to work in a high-pressure environment with a focus on safety and precision.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks related to test setups and equipment handling.
  • Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures and conditions, including outdoor and controlled test environments.

Work Environment:

  • The position involves working in test facilities and may include exposure to hazardous materials and conditions. Strict adherence to safety protocols and procedures is mandatory.
