Position Summary

Green Bank Observatory (GBO) enables leading edge research at radio wavelengths by offering telescope, facility and advanced instrumentation access to the astronomy community as well as to other basic and applied research communities. Nestled in the mountain ranges and farmland of West Virginia, within the National Quiet Zone, radio astronomers are using the Green Bank Telescope to listen to the remote whispers of the universe, in order to discover answers to our most astounding astronomical questions.  With radio astronomy as its foundation, the Green Bank Observatory is a world leader in advancing research, innovation, and education.

 

At the GBO in Green Bank, West Virginia, we have an employment opportunity for a Shop Technical Specialist I (Shop Tech Spec). Under normal supervision, the Shop Tech Spec will be responsible for; setting up, adjusting, and operating a variety of precision tool room equipment including but not limited to mill lathe and CNC machines, as well as working in other areas as assigned.

 

What You Will Be Doing:

  • As directed, sets up, adjusts and operates a variety of precision tool room equipment including but not limited to mill, lathe and CNC machines.
  • Must be able to understand simple blueprints and sketches.
  • Produces parts from a variety of raw materials.
  • Must be able to meet specified tolerances.
  • Understands and uses a variety of precision measuring equipment.
  • Produces all types of surface finishes, as directed.
  • Uses a variety of chemicals including solvents and dyes.
  • Works closely with other department members, Technicians and Engineers, as directed.
  • Documents changes necessitated during fabrication.
  • Works within and meets established deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn CAD/CAM software and ability to learn NC programing as required.
  • Proactive Compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works both inside and outside, occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and occasionally works at heights over five feet. The employee will work around various chemicals, hot work, and other areas related to industrial machine work.

 

Who You Are:

 

  • You have a High school diploma or GED; Technical School Diploma (related to field); or Recognized toolmaker apprenticeship.
  • You have a minimum of 2 years of experience in related field
  • You value working and living in a rural environment
  • Capable of working alone or as a part of a team with minimal supervision
  • You have a valid Driver's License

 

Additional Requirements:

  • CPR and First Aid certifications may be required

The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
