Maxar is hiring a Meteorological Data Engineer to join our WeatherDesk team! In this role you will work alongside fellow WeatherDesk Data Engineers to build innovative data solutions for our clients, create/support Maxar WeatherDesk’s products and services, as well as handle complex data workflows. This environment will be fast paced as you will be supporting critical client decision making in a sprint environment. What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Extract and transform data using programming languages such as Python and associated open-source data analytic libraries
  • Develop workflows to efficiently process meteorological data collected via data sources (ground stations, satellites, models) and applying algorithms to add value
  • Demonstrate good judgement in applying data and meteorology methods and techniques
  • Ascertaining unique ways to apply scientific ideas and algorithms to enhance product and data quality
  • Monitor and troubleshoot time-sensitive cloud-based models and processes
  • Work as part of an agile cross-disciplinary team to bring new products to market
  • Support time-sensitive data deliveries to both our internal and external clients

Minimum Requirements:

  • 3-5+ years of data and meteorological experience
  • Degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or related field. Degree may be substituted with 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience working and developing in a Linux environment, including virtual machines and Dockerized containers
  • Advanced knowledge of Python programming language using data science libraries such as numpy, scipy, xarray, pandas, matplotlib, rasterio, and/or zarr
  • Strong understanding of atmospheric model data formats such as GRIB, NetCDF, and/or GeoTIFF. Including how to manipulate them using packages such as ecCodes
  • Working knowledge of writing and deploying software solutions within AWS using a multitude of services
  • Experience with version control software (such as Git) and CI/CD tools (such as CodeBuild/CodePipeline)
  • Working knowledge writing SQL queries against relational databases such as MySQL and/or PostgreSQL

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in physical science (preferably meteorology), computer science, or related field
  • Comfort working within an Agile Scrum-team environment
  • Experience processing data in varied environments including serverless, containers, VMs, and/or EC2 instances
  • Proficiency writing solutions within AWS using services such as ECS, EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, Step Functions, CloudWatch and CloudFormation
  • Experience managing data streams with LDM
  • Familiarity with API development in Python with Flask and Tornado web servers
  • Experience creating graphics with GrADS and various Python data science libraries
  • Experience with commercial and open-source GIS software/libraries including ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, GeoServer, Rio Tiler, and GDAL
  • Functional knowledge of additional languages such as NodeJS, Javascript, R, and Bash scripting

Our salary ranges are market-driven and set to allow for flexibility. Individual pay will be competitive based on a candidate’s unique set of knowledge, skills, and geographic diversity, with earnings potential commensurate with experience. The range for this position is:

$98,000.00 - $164,000.00 annually.
