Job description

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

Ursa Major’s team moves fast and does a lot with little. In this role, the Senior Test Engineer is responsible for leading a clean-sheet hydrazine thruster test stand through design, analysis, procurement, build, and commissioning and operation. We expect this technical leadership engineer to be a self-starter who understands the safety and operational concerns working with hypergolic propellants. Hands-on experience is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible Engineer for hydrazine thruster test stand design, procurement, and fabrication
  • Lead all efforts around permitting, safety, procedures, and operation of hydrazine thruster test stand for in-space propulsion applications.
  • Generate budgets and schedules for long lead items, including large scale capital expenses related to clean-sheet test stand
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineering team to advance their proficiency.
  • Make strategic decisions to improve test efficiency and support long-term test goals of engine and component/system teams.
  • Engage the team in the resolution of technical problems within program schedule milestones and budget. Make decisions in support of multiple programs.
  • Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics.
  • Generate and review piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)
  • Generate facility layouts

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree or higher in an engineering field (Mechanical or Chemical Engineer preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience with piping, facility, or test system design
  • 5+ years of experience with hypergol test stands and testing
  • Strong GD&T and CAD experience (Solid Works, PTC Creo, Siemens NX)
  • Familiarity with piping design software (Caesar II, Bentley AutoPipe, CaePipe)
  • Hands-on experience with ASME piping codes
  • Experience working with multiple engineering disciplines and technicians
  • US citizenship required

Desired Qualifications:

  • Able to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
  • Familiar with National Fire Protection Association, International Fire Code, International Building Code, and International Machine Code
  • Familiarity with FEA software (ANSYS preferred)
  • Proven track record of teamwork and team leadership
  • Deep understanding of compatibility, operational hazards, and performance characteristics of Hydrazine (or similar propellant)
