Job description

As a Build Manager reporting through the build management team, you will be responsible for coordinating the execution of a project across all disciplines. You will be leading project planning, recovery plans, and build execution in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You will serve as a Manufacturing liaison between all departments at Virgin Galactic to coordinate, execute, and achieve project goals.

  • Reports program status, risk assessment, and other metrics to Senior Leadership and Program Management Office (PMO) to support short term and long-term goals
  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a manufacturing build plan for the program
  • Provides a clear plan of action for the production team
  • Coordinates efforts amongst the engineering and manufacturing departments to develop MBOM structure to ensure a smooth and efficient transition to the production team
  • Works with the Program Manager to deliver the project safely, on time, and on budget
  • Provides conflict resolution to schedule setbacks by developing and implementing recovery plans with engineering and manufacturing
  • Coordinates efforts between all manufacturing and engineering functions to properly support the build schedule by means of identifying tooling, materials, resources, planning, and product definition to ensure a seamless transition from paper to reality
  • Works with production control to assure assembly flow is properly supported by all functions to deliver material and hardware on schedule

Requirement Skills and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a relevant Engineering, Quality, Operations, or science discipline preferred, or 10 + years of experience with product assembly build structure and integration concepts and practices
  • Experience in Manufacturing Project Management
  • 5+ years of demonstrated leadership experience with production, assembly, and systems integration teams, at least 3 of which were in a managerial role
  • 3+ years of experience within an internal customer-facing role.
  • Strong understanding of engineering and manufacturing functions
  • Excellent knowledge of component assembly, both subassembly and final top-level assembly
  • Extensive experience and/or training in lean manufacturing principles and leading or participating in process improvement workshops or Kaizen events
  • Strong understanding of schedule, quality, and budget relationship
  • Working knowledge of configuration management practices and quality management processes
  • Experience with manufacturing-based ERP systems a plus
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the proven ability to lead, motivate, and build teams
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, combined with a strong commercial acumen to measure the potential impact of each decision
  • Excellent organizational skills, easily capable of effectively juggling and completing multiple tasks at the same time, and thrives under pressure
  • Highly autonomous with effective delegation skills
  • Extreme attention to detail and continual pursuit of perfection

 

Physical and/or Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work a Hybrid schedule, 3 days a week onsite, and be flexible to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed at the Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 9 hours min.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted).

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $96,600.00–$147,300.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
