Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is looking for you to join our team within Marine Logistics Support (MLS) as a Field Service Engineer 4. Duties of the Field Service Engineer may include (but are not limited to) overseeing the installation, repair and troubleshooting of mechanical aspects of the Northrop Grumman Marine Systems marine machinery onboard naval vessels in accordance with Northrop Grumman drawing and processes.
This position is travel based and may be filled in any continental US State. Candidates work will be performed at customer locations such as San Diego, CA, Norfolk, VA, Groton, CT, Bremerton, WA, Pearl Harbor, HI and Kittery, ME.
What You'll Get to Do:
Position responsibilities include project planning and management, customer interface, providing technical direction to shipyard or Northrop Grumman trade personnel, technical report writing, expense reporting and accounting, initiation of design changes when necessary and occasional hands on labor. The Field Service Engineer should be comfortable working and traveling independently.
Additional job responsibilities of a MLS Field Service Engineer:
- Manage their field assignments and supervise all aspects of the work including leading NG factory hourly personnel, NG factory engineering personnel, customer provided labor, sub-vendors, and/or Ship’s Force.
- Operate independently at customer facilities, with remote guidance and technical assistance as needed.
- Autonomously define requirements and the path to a repair or resolution by using NGC drawings and documented processes. The repair path is unique for each task based on the problem presented and is communicated to the customer and management. Tasking may require re-prioritization to achieve critical objectives, deadlines and milestones.
- Required to write technical condition reports that capture customer required data/measurements as interim, or final, progress for the projects they manage.
- Communicate project status to MLS management and to customers.
- Provide technical support to customers and guidance to touch labor during the installation, modification, trouble-shooting, repair and test of marine propulsion and power generation equipment.
- Compiles a recommended replacement material list to aid in repairs and troubleshooting.
- Provides technical engineering support during repairs.
- Determines the cause of the problem.
- Oversees the disassembly and inspection process.
- Designs custom tooling, jigs or equipment as needed.
- Creates a disassembly and inspection plan by apply engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
- Analyzes what is wrong with the machinery/system by talking to the customer, observing machine operations, defining a troubleshooting plan, and analyzing control system data.
- MLS Field Service Engineers are responsible for tracking contract financials, contract scope and departure from scope, which results in Requests for Equitable Adjustment (REA) to the contract.
- Work at customer sites, normally onboard Navy surface ships and submarines. The working environment is not an office but a heavy manufacturing or operating environment requiring climbing ladders and navigating cramped spaces for access. Field Service Engine are on their feet most of the day, climbing on and over equipment for inspection.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or similar with 7+ years', Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or similar with 5+ years, or a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or similar with 2+ years of experience working on shipboard marine machinery or similar equipment.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and schematics.
- Strong communications skills both oral and written.
- Strong customer service skills including positive attitude.
- Capable of performing work onboard a ship which can involve climbing steep stairways, vertical ladders and working an extended work day.
- Ability/Willingness to frequently work extended hours (often 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week).
- US Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands on experience and theoretical knowledge of steam driven shipboard propulsion and power generation equipment and their associated subsystems.
- Working knowledge of a machine shop, various hand tools and measuring devices, and shipyard work experience.
- Candidate located near customer sites: San Diego, CA, Norfolk, VA, Groton, CT, and Kittery, ME.
- Active Secret Clearance.
