Vast is looking for a Senior Prototyping Specialist, reporting to the Senior Industrial Designer, to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations.
This will be a full-time, non-exempt position located in our Long Beach location.
Responsibilities:
- Create prototypes to support marketing, design and human systems teams
- Advise engineers to optimize and accelerate building methods
- Ensure and educate safe best practices when building prototypes in an evolving environment
- Create and maintain a safe and productive prototyping shop
- Lead prototype design reviews with astronauts and potential customers
- Work with exterior vendors to create assets for exhibitions. Process multiple bids from competing contractors by creating scopes of work
- Provide campus wide reporting on departmental spend, ticketing, and other metrics as requested
- Assist with badges, International Traffic Arms Regulations (ITAR) and non-disclosure agreement (NDA) requirements, and safety training
- Ensure purchase orders are accurate with no cost overruns
Minimum Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in hardware prototyping
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design
- Experience operating and managing a prototyping shop
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience in diverse rapid prototyping techniques such as foam core building, advanced sewing and CNC operation
- Experience working under tight deadlines
- Experience managing multiple prototyping projects simultaneously
- Experience teaching others prototyping best practices
- Knowledge of computer applications and the ability to easily navigate through different computer software programs
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to make independent judgments with limited information
- Communication skills for relaying data (verbally and in-writing) between other employees, vendors, and customers
- Logical and strategic approach to solving problems
- Ability to read and understand basic floor plans
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends to support critical mission milestones
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted
- Specific certifications, as appropriate
