Job Description Qualifications:

Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) Space, Intelligence & Weapon Systems (SI&WS) is seeking a Senior Production Engineering Manager to join our team in New Orleans, LA at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility. This Capability Leader will be responsible for Production Engineering (PE) at the primary sites of New Orleans, LA and Kennedy Space Center, FL.  This position will be responsible for managing employees and managers performing PE activities supporting Space Launch Systems (SLS) execution.

This leader must have strong experience in development programs and effectively building solid cross-functional relationships to define and align priorities to drive outcomes for functional execution. In addition, this leader must have demonstrated performance leading through complexity and dynamic changes, proven ability to simplify objectives, be a creative strategic problem solver, and proficient in concise Boeing and government customer executive communication including metrics and recovery plans.  Other skills the leader must possess expertise in include mediating conflicts, balancing conflicting priorities, and fostering cooperation to address intricate technical and program-related challenges. Furthermore, the leader must also be able to develop work management strategies to create capacity for the team to tackle longer-term “important but not urgent” priorities.

Boeing has played a significant role in human space exploration for the past six decades. Now, as part of the NASA Artemis program, Boeing is the prime contractor for the design, development, test, and production of the SLS core stage, upper stage, and flight avionics suite. On November 16, 2022, the SLS rocket successfully launched as part of the Artemis I Mission, which served as an uncrewed test flight to validate the rocket components and systems in preparation for future crewed missions. Boeing is currently working on the core stages for Artemis II, III and IV as well as the first Exploration Upper Stage, which will replace the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) in future Artemis missions.  This role will report directly to the SI&WS Senior Director and Capability Leader for Production Engineering, Test, and Launch with indirect program relationships aligned to SLS program management priorities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead production engineering (PE) ensuring execution of SOW aligned to quality, safety, cost & delivery objectives – executing integrated organizational plans, policies and procedures and guiding the development of technical strategies to meet organizational goals with metrics in place to manage performance to plan, actions to improve, recovery plans, and communicating information at an executive level.
  • Provides oversight and approval of technical approaches, products, and processes to ensure alignment with business plans and goals and compliance with command media, processes, procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement strategies embedded within the organizational culture to advance LEAN across the value stream.
  • Proactively identify and adopt technologies and tools, aligned to BDS standards.
  • Show a proactive and patient personality with a willingness to listen, coach, and lead the team with clear direction.
  • Communicate clearly at all levels, adjusting for the audience.
  • Bring creative solutions and plans to solve problems, bringing engineering excellence aligned to program priorities.
  • Lead execution of ‘start right’ production engineering, support gate reviews, proposal reviews, business capture, and future factory activities.
  • Manage workforce talent ensuring teams are staffed with the skills needed including identifying skill gaps and working cross functionally to develop and deploy training, etc. to mitigate them and development of Technical Fellowships, Production Architects, and Technical Lead Engineers.
  • Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners, and direct reports including the establishment of working relationships with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Safety, Test.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.  Expectations are to spend 50-75% onsite at Michoud with the remainder of time allocated to travel as appropriate to support the business.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.  An interim and/or final U.S. Top Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Special Program Access or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 5+ years of experience in aerospace, automotive, robotics or similar industry.
  • 5+ years of experience in Production Engineering, Structures Design and/or Analytical Engineering or a combination of these experiences.
  • 5+ years of experience managing people, programs, and budgets.
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering senior management.
  • Experience leading or managing large or complex teams of managers and/or non-management employees.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience leading teams of over 50 people (directly or indirectly).
  • Experience working & managing across functional team of touch labor, engineers, and managers.
  • Significant development and development-to-production transition experience with demonstrated skills in leading medium to large teams through all phases of development and Production.
  • Understanding of large-scale build sequences and multi-site operations.
  • Experience with constraint-based schedule development and maintenance.
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree with production engineering experience, knowledge of factory operations, manufacturing capabilities (e.g., composites, structures), and data needed for defining delivery configurations (e.g., design definition, program directives, engineering drawings, change memos, wiring diagrams, schematics, functional tests, and supplier data).
  • Ability to create an environment of inclusion, transparency, and trust, executing with strong values.
  • Proactively and quickly makes sense of complex issues and responding effectively to complex and ambiguous situations.
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to communicate verbally and present clearly at all levels, adjusting for the audience.
  • Familiarity with NASA processes and One Boeing Production System (One-BPS).
  • Domain knowledge in production engineering best practices for maritime and subsea environments and associated materials.
  • Domain knowledge leading Model Based Engineering (MBE), Design for Assembly (DFA), Designing for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Affordability (DFA).
  • Demonstrated skills in Risk Management and Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) efforts.
  • Cost Account Management using Boeing processes and procedures, including Earned Value Management (EVM).
  • Proficiency with MESci, Aurora precedence networking tool, Model Based Work Instructions development.
