This role is part of the Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance team. This team is focused on monitoring and assessing processes that guide Blue Origin’s design, manufacturing, and operations, ensuring system safety engineering, environmental health, and safety, product integrity, and continuous improvement processes. 

As a member of the diverse and hardworking Emergency Response Team, we will respond to all on-site emergencies, help keep our coworkers safe, ensure programmatic readiness, and report directly to the ERT Commander to ensure safe and efficient execution of the ERT program and emergency preparedness in both spaceflight and daily operations. A selfless passion for service and for human spaceflight is required, and a desire to help achieve our company goals through your unique position as an emergency responder. Additionally, you will assist the ERT Commander in respirator fit testing, confined space classes, instruction policy writing and review, organization and inventory, and acting as a representative of the Commander at internal or external events, when needed.

This position is based in Van Horn, TX. Being at the heart of Blue Origin operations, the West Texas Site offers eligible employees additional attractive financial incentives to supplement their competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance, etc. Eligibility is based on the employee’s ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn, TX, or work on site a minimum of 50% of the time.

Responsibilities:

  • Site emergency response for all emergencies, including: EMS calls, fires, natural disasters, technical rescues, HAZMAT, hazardous operation standbys, and mutual aid responses, sometimes initially alone or in a small group.

  • Applying cloud-based software to conduct a variety of inspections and maintenance checks such as: SCBA, technical rescue gear, site EMS kits, and radios, following NFPA guidance.

  • Instruct classes such as CPR/AED/First Aid, fire extinguisher, and others for the site.

  • Perform standbys for Astronaut Duty during launch activities.

  • Perform moderate emergency response vehicle and station modifications such as emergency light modifications, radio installations, and mounting accessories, due to the remote nature of our site, in addition to general maintenance and cleaning of station/equipment.

  • Perform emergency drills with the site to ensure readiness.

  • Assist the Commander with administrative tasks, such as paperwork related to certification, inventory tracking, maintenance records, and travel.

  • Follow all ERT guidelines, policies, and the Code of Conduct.

  • Ability to work periodic extended shifts and potential for a rotating schedule.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of proven emergency response experience, including but not limited to: military, fire/rescue, EMS, law enforcement, corrections, hazardous materials, emergency management.

  • Be able to make quick, sound decisions in emergency situations while exhibiting the emotional stability and courage to perform hazardous duties under stress.

  • IS 700, 800, ICS 100, 200.

  • Current NREMT and Texas DSHS Emergency Medical Technician license.

  • HAZWOPER Awareness/Operations.

  • Knowledge and proficiency with SCBA and SAR systems.

  • Must be willing to acquire other certifications as needed, such as advanced fire, medical, officer, hazmat, or other certifications.

  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical skills for maintenance and problem-solving.

  • Strong digital literacy including the latest Microsoft Office programs, including writing professional documents or memorandums.

  • Strong self-management skills to keep on track with weekly and monthly tasks.

  • Must be flexible and able to work all hours, including weekends and off shifts as required, to supplement the Commander in efficient ERT coverage.

  • Pre-employment physical required annually and thereafter.

  • Requires strenuous exertion under such conditions as fire, heat, smoke, variable weather, confined spaces, heights, loud noises, and other hazardous situations.

  • Ability to lift or pull up to 200 pounds of heavy objects or bodies, crawling, bending, running, kneeling, climbing on and off equipment and maintain fitness for job year round.

  • Initial and annual timed Physical Assessment Test designed around job-related duties.

  • This role is subject to random drug testing due to the criticality of the position.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and add to our inclusive culture.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • SFFMA, IFSAC, TCFP, or DOD structural firefighter 1 certification.

  • 5-7 years aerospace and/or aviation experience.
