This role is a part of Test & Flight Operations team, providing centralized support to Business Units with the focus on design, build and maintenance of the ground systems, test and launch facilities across multiple locations.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers, you will design and deploy test systems and for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of component, sub-assembly, and vehicle level testing. We design data acquisition and control systems based on NI CompactRIO, CompactDAQ, PXI, Allen-Bradley PLC’s, and other hardware that will test fluid, mechanical, and electrical development and flight systems of our engines and launch vehicles. Our team provides support for business units and programs across Blue Origin for critical development, qualification, and acceptance testing.

In this role you will lead the Data Systems & Controls Engineering Hardware design team, responsible for control system electrical and hardware design, field wiring, and PLC programming. You will maintain a 5-year plan for the team and work with the individuals on the team to help them prioritize their work and set goals; you will perform performance reviews and other management tasks. In addition to leadership and management, you will perform technical work, including design and troubleshooting, and mentorship of less experienced engineers. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining related process and procedures. You will be responsible for effectively communicating to your team, to your management and with other teams at Blue (internal design teams, operations teams, the Quality organization, and business units).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 8+ years of direct development experience in data acquisition and control system design and applications in an aerospace or equivalent stringent environment
  • Experience creating and supervising the installation of electrical systems; including planning (schedule, budget, resources, personnel), design, build, activation, etc.
  • 0-2 years of personnel management
  • Organized, self-starter, capable of breaking down complex problems into traceable tasks
  • Exhibit excellent judgement and be comfortable making high-quality and high-velocity decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Effective project management
  • Exhibit ability to adapt and excel in changing, growing environment
  • Work effectively in a team
  • Up to 25% travel
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with rocket testing and space vehicles
  • Experience with process development and ownership
  • Experience designing PLC control systems and programming
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical
  • Experience with LabVIEW and NI DAQ products (cRIO, PXI)
  • Experience working with electrical control systems and industrial sensors and actuators: pressure, temperature, LVDT, bridge, accelerometers, and motion/servo controllers

Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $136,620-$191,268

Other site ranges may differ
