Job description

Sierra Space Careers: Dare to Dream

We honor those that are not afraid to dream big dreams, those that tenaciously chase their dreams even when others say it cannot be done, those that achieve big dreams and change everything. Those are Dreams Worth Chasing.

At Sierra Space we envision a future where humanity lives and works in space, on moons, and on distant planets. Our mission isn’t restricted to the few, instead we see a future where all people can choose to live, work, discover and explore beyond our planet. Our company is building a platform in space to benefit life on Earth and together we will alter the course of humanity.

We have a bold mission. We are a bold company. Together, we are an extraordinary team.

About the Role

Sierra Space is seeking an experienced and innovative Responsible Engineer to lead the development and implementation of cutting-edge infrared (IR) sensor detection and tracking algorithms. The ideal candidate will be charged with overseeing the entire project lifecycle, from conceptual design through to deployment and operational support. This role requires a deep technical understanding of IR sensor technologies, detection methods, tracking systems, and algorithm development, along with project management skills to drive the project to successful completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage the architecture, design, implementation, and optimization of IR sensor detection and tracking algorithms.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams, providing technical guidance and direction to ensure project milestones are met.
  • Work closely with systems engineers to integrate algorithms into larger sensor systems and platforms.
  • Conduct performance analysis and validation against requirements to ensure system accuracy and reliability.
  • Stay abreast of advances in IR sensor technology and algorithm development to continually improve system capabilities.
  • Interface with stakeholders to gather requirements, report on progress, and deliver technical presentations.
  • Drive the resolution of technical challenges and ensure risk mitigation strategies are in place and effective.
  • Participate in peer reviews, audits, and design reviews to maintain high quality and to foster an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior engineers and support their professional development.

  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret with SCI eligibility U.S. Security Clearance is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in IR sensor technology and algorithm development
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, or MATLAB as it relates to algorithm development
  • Experience with real-time operating systems and embedded software development
  • Proven track record of successfully leading complex engineering projects
  • Strong knowledge of signal processing, image processing, and pattern recognition principles
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles and practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques applicable to IR sensor data
  • Previous experience with hardware-software integration in sensor systems
  • Proficient with data structures

Physical/Mental/Emotional Requirements:

  • Frequently walk, sit, stand, climb stairs and steps
  • Frequently repeat same hand, arm, and finger motion many times to include finger and hand dexterity
  • Rarely lifting or carrying up to 20 lbs.

  • Rarely exposed to fumes or hazardous chemicals/materials
  • Rarely exposed to loud noises

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret with SCI eligibility U.S. Security Clearance. U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance for employment.
